Responsibilities
- Efficiently manages the engineering department and reports machinery and equipment status to the Master.
- Supervises and coordinates crew activities related to propulsion engines, deck machinery, electrical refrigeration, and sanitary equipment.
- Ensures paperwork requirements are met and complies with company policies, USCG, and environmental regulations.
- Overhauls lifeboats and lifeboat gear, lowers or raises lifeboats with a winch or falls, and participates in safety and rescue drills.
- Performs maintenance and lubrication of deck machinery and equipment.
- Performs emergency repairs, operates firefighting equipment, and assists with man overboard crises.
- Directs passengers in emergencies, provides first aid, launches lifeboats/life rafts, and controls firefighting and damage control equipment.
- Ensures cleanliness of engine room, bilges, rudder room, and void spaces, and maintains engine room watch when underway.
- Performs safety-sensitive duties, including directing passengers in emergencies, controlling and operating lifesaving and firefighting equipment, and securing water-tight or gas-tight integrity of the vessel.
- Trains and assists in maintenance and repair activities.
Security Functions
- Designated security duties include notifying supervisors of accidents/illnesses/vessel incidents/near misses, participating in safety programs, utilizing “Stop Work Authority,” and ensuring the maintenance and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Ensures the elimination of at-risk behaviors by reducing unsafe conditions and acts to prevent unsafe acts on and around the work site.
Safety Sensitive Functions
- Directs and musters passengers in emergencies, passes out life jackets, controls and operates lifesaving and firefighting equipment, and secures water-tight or gas-tight integrity of the vessel.
- Operates fixed fire fighting equipment, assists on deck for man overboard crises, and responds to emergency situations directed by the Master/Mate.
Supervisory Functions
- Remain alert at all times for potential hazards and provide on-the-job training to crew members and new personnel.
- Conducts ongoing safety programs, emergency drills, and emphasizes the use of PPE.
- Communicates the requirements and contents of the Master’s Manual (MS) to company representatives, regulatory personnel, and vessel crew-members.
- Ensures full handover is completed with the oncoming Chief Engineer and documents using the Engineer Turnover Report in Checklist.
