Assistant Driller

About the Role

An Assistant Driller is responsible for a variety of field-centric duties, including driving the drill rig or semi-truck and trailer (which requires a Class A CDL with air brake endorsement—SME will assist you in obtaining your Class A CDL), maintaining drill rigs, troubleshooting equipment problems, and working with a Driller to complete assignments using various drilling and sampling techniques.

Responsibilities

• Assist and work with a lead Driller to complete assignments using various drilling and sampling techniques, including lifting and other manual work as required (must be able to lift 100 pounds).
• Drive the drill rig or semi-truck and trailer to project sites, which requires a Class A CDL with air brake endorsement.
• Promote and adhere to safe work practices at all times for yourself, the lead Driller, and others while driving and working at project sites.
• Operate a drill rig to perform geotechnical borings from a few feet deep to more than 100 feet deep.
• Properly maintain drill rigs and other necessary equipment.
• Troubleshoot and resolve drill rig and equipment problems.
• Perform work outdoors at project sites in a variety of weather conditions typical to the Midwest.
• Work with traffic control subcontractors as required for roadway work projects.
• Work safely and alert others to potential safety hazards.
• Wear appropriate personal protection equipment at job sites at all times.
• Travel to, from, and work at out-of-town, overnight projects located away from your base of operations (sometimes for extended periods of time).
• Work effectively as a team player to meet the needs of our internal and external clients.

Requirements

• Basic construction competencies, including the ability to determine location from surface features and landmarks by interpretation from surveys, road maps, aerial photos, topographic maps, and geologic maps.
• Understanding of construction stakes set by others and color markings of utility companies.
• General aptitude for identifying and resolving complex technical problems in the field, utilizing critical thinking and logical reasoning.
• Collaborative spirit to work effectively in a team environment, supporting colleagues, clients, and contributing to project goals.
• Proactive approach to taking ownership of tasks, seeking opportunities for improvement, and contributing innovative ideas to enhance processes.
• Accurate and detailed record-keeping skills, documenting field observations, safety concerns, and problem resolutions.
