We are seeking experienced prosecutors for our Vehicular Homicide Unit within the Homicide Bureau. This unit investigates and prosecutes cases involving deaths and serious injuries resulting from vehicle crashes, often responding immediately to significant crash scenes.

About the role

ADAs in this unit handle complex and sensitive cases from investigation through grand jury presentation, including personal response to major crash scenes. The work involves scientific and forensic evidence, requiring comfort with technical details, strong caseload management, and compassion for families experiencing sudden loss. Candidates should understand the distinctions between negligent, reckless, and depraved behavior behind the wheel.

Responsibilities

  • Handle cases from investigation through grand jury presentation, including response to significant crash scenes.
  • Manage all aspects of trial preparation: case enhancement, discovery compliance, and motion practice.
  • Address significant legal and factual issues during suppression hearings.
  • Prosecute jury and nonjury trials, examining civilian, law enforcement, and expert witnesses (e.g., forensic biology, collision reconstruction).
  • Interact with family members who have suffered loss with kindness and compassion.

Requirements

  • J.D. degree and active membership in the New York State bar in good standing.
  • New York State residency and at least 4 years of post-J.D. experience.
  • Grand Jury and felony jury trial experience.
  • Experience with VTL, PL Article 125, DMV procedures, and criminal investigation/prosecution.
  • Excellent writing, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of New York Penal and Criminal Procedure Laws.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Significant knowledge of the effects of intoxicants and medications.
  • Experience with blood warrants and accident reconstruction.
  • Experience examining and cross-examining forensic experts (e.g., alcohol/drug intoxication, crime scene analysis, medical/mental health issues).

Pay

Salary range: $102,000 to $134,000, commensurate with experience.

United States citizenship and New York State residency are required upon commencement of employment.
