Assistant Director, Risk Management & Aquatics

Coordinates and manages the department risk management program and processes, including oversight of the McHugh Natatorium and aquatics staff. Supervises hiring, training, and development of 25 Aquatics Specialists.

Responsibilities

• 25% - Safety, Risk Management and Compliance:
  • Coordinates overall safety and compliance management activities to ensure adherence to departmental, University, and State policies and regulations.
  • Participates in departmental, Divisional, and University committees, projects, activities, and events to ensure employee and participant safety.
  • Conducts on-site safety inspections and audits.
  • Serves as departmental Emergency Operations Center (EOC) representative.
  • Acts as primary Certified Pool Operator to ensure compliance with SC DHEC regulations.
• 25% - Training and Development:
  • Develops training and professional development programs to enhance staff experience and growth in risk management procedures.
  • Trains and certifies aquatics staff as Lifeguards.
  • Serves as the primary American Red Cross Instructor Trainer for the department, certifying area instructors in CPR, First Aid, and Lifeguarding.
  • Manages all department safety certification courses to ensure staff maintain their certifications.
• 10% - Committee Participation and Collaboration:
  • Participates in departmental committees and national organizations related to the position.
  • Collaborates with campus recreation team members and other university organizations to develop programs and services supporting the University Mission.
• 40% - Aquatics Program Management:
  • Oversees daily operations of the McHugh Natatorium, ensuring a safe, efficient, and welcoming environment.
  • Recruits, hires, trains, schedules, supervises, and evaluates aquatics student staff, fostering professional development and operational excellence.
  • Supervises and mentors one Aquatics Graduate Assistant, providing guidance in program administration and staff leadership.
  • Develops and assesses aquatics programs, services, and special events to promote student engagement.

Requirements

• A bachelor's degree and experience in student services programs.
• American Red Cross Instructor Trainer Certification in Lifeguarding, CPR/First Aid, and AED (or ability to obtain within 6 months).

Skills

• Fundamental working knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures related to risk management and aquatics program oversight.
• Ability to apply risk management principles in varied situations.
• Supervisory experience, including recommendations for hiring, termination, and pay adjustments.

Budgetary Responsibilities

Provides input into the budgeting process and manages fund allocation up to $100,000.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to perceive, observe, and communicate clearly.
• Capability to position self to accomplish tasks (e.g., stoop, kneel, crawl).
• Ability to ascend or descend (e.g., stairs, ladder).
• Use of hands or feet to operate machinery or equipment.
• Frequent walking or movement about the facility.

Schedule

Standard hours: 37.5 per week.

Pay

Expected salary range: $45,000 - $50,975. Salary is dependent on experience, knowledge, skills, and performance.
