Assistant Director of Environmental Health and Safety

Supports the Director of Environmental Health and Safety in maintaining Bowdoin College’s comprehensive Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Program. Develops and maintains safety programs that meet applicable federal, state, and local regulations and standards. Provides campus outreach, communications, and education across academic and administrative departments to promote risk reduction and awareness of EHS issues. Manages the campus learning management system for all EHS-related training programs. Supervises one Safety Specialist.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain safety programs in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and standards.
• Provide campus outreach, communications, and education to promote risk reduction and awareness of EHS issues.
• Manage the campus learning management system to support all EHS-related training programs.
• Supervise one Safety Specialist.
• Develop and edit written safety compliance plans and associated documents.
• Conduct thorough safety inspections and generate accurate and detailed inspection documents.
• Analyze and interpret technical documents or regulations to determine applicability and compliance steps.
• Assess situations, provide recommendations, and make decisions to ensure campus safety.
• Manage interpersonal relationships, resolve conflicts, and communicate effectively with diverse groups.
• Oversee project management and contracted services.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree required.
• RCRA Hazardous Waste and DOT Hazardous Materials Transportation training required.
• Minimum of 4-7 years of experience in a related position/field.
• Demonstrated working knowledge of OSHA, EPA, MEDEP, NFPA, and state/local regulations.
• Detailed knowledge of environmental engineering principles, occupational health and safety sciences, and/or chemical process safety (e.g., industrial hygiene, risk assessment, environmental permitting, environmental remediation).
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and related office equipment and software.
• Ability to independently recognize programmatic growth opportunities and implement strategic solutions.
• Strong vision and self-starter ability to expand existing programs and build new ones from the ground up.
• Ability to provide insight, guidance, and leadership to ensure campus safety.
• Demonstrated capability to assess situations, speak in public, and make recommendations/decisions.
• Ability to manage interpersonal relationships, resolve conflicts, and communicate effectively with diverse groups.
• Supervisory experience.
• Project management and contracted services experience.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree preferred.
• Certification in one of the following preferred: Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM).

Pay

Hiring range: $77,200 - $84,100.

Schedule

Full-time position (1.00 FTE) working 40 hours per week, 52 weeks per year. Standard administrative hours are 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM.
