About the Role

This position assists in the supervision of laboratory testing to obtain data for diagnosis and treatment of diseases.

Responsibilities

  • In the absence of the Director of Laboratory Services, assumes duties of that position.
  • Actively participates in the selection of new procedures and improvement of existing ones.
  • Schedules laboratory coverage, makes work assignments, and determines work priorities.
  • Develops and evaluates, or assists in the development and evaluation of every section's quality control program.
  • Prepares and certifies payroll.
  • Assists in the preparation of the department's budget in cooperation with Administration.
  • Assists in evaluating employee performance and sets attitudes and goals for the department.
  • Interviews prospective personnel and makes recommendations on hiring and firing.
  • Functions as a liaison to other hospital departments, medical staff, and Administration.
  • Coordinates departmental in-service education activities.
  • Provides statistical data to Administration.
  • Coordinates the proficiency testing program for the department.
  • Assists in coordinating the orientation of new employees in departmental procedures and hospital policy.
  • Ensures proper maintenance of department records.

Qualifications

Education

Required:

  • Master’s Degree from an accredited institution with a major in one of the chemical, physical, or biological sciences, and subsequent to graduation, at least four years of pertinent laboratory experience, including two years in the designated specialty in a clinical laboratory and two years in a supervisory position.
  • OR Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited educational institution with a major in one of the chemical, physical, or biological sciences, and subsequent to graduation:
    • At least six years of pertinent laboratory experience in a hospital clinical laboratory.
    • Successfully completed pertinent courses that, combined with experience, provide technical and professional knowledge comparable to a Bachelor’s in Medical Technology, plus two years in supervision.
  • OR Associate’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, including successful completion of a nationally accredited program and certification through a national accrediting agency, with a minimum of ten years of experience in all pertinent departments in the laboratory.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology, including successful completion of a CAHEA-accredited School of Medical Technology and certification by a national agency recognized by the profession of medical technology, plus at least four years of pertinent clinical laboratory experience and two years in a supervisory position.
  • Completion of certification through a nationally recognized accrediting body as a Medical Technologist through testing and experience.
