Harvard Law School’s Office of Career Services (OCS) guides a talented and diverse student body as they define, refine, and implement their career goals. OCS supports students in charting their own course in the legal profession and beyond, serving as advisors, guides, and collaborators with students and alumni. The office focuses on private sector careers and judicial clerkships while working closely with the Office of Public Interest Advising (OPIA).

About the role

The Assistant Director for JD Advising interacts extensively with highly talented students, collaborates with a dynamic and creative Career Services staff, and contributes to the day-to-day operations of a vital and fast-paced student services office.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive career counseling to JD students across their 3-year HLS experience
  • Develop and present live and recorded programming to large and small groups of students on a range of career-related topics
  • Serve as a liaison to and collaborate with various student groups on career-related projects
  • Serve as a resource for students interested in business careers and other alternative careers
  • Write career-related materials including sections of the OCS website and communications blog

Requirements

  • J.D. with 3 or more years of relevant professional work experience

Qualifications

  • Experience in a law school career services office or in a law firm with exposure to recruiting and working with new lawyers
  • Experience and enthusiasm for working one-on-one with a diverse group of students
  • Understanding of the “BigLaw” recruiting landscape
  • Interest in helping students look beyond the “BigLaw” landscape as they think about long-term and short-term goals, including moving in-house or into the public sector
  • Excellent organizational, project management, interpersonal, presentation, and writing skills
  • Ability to plan and meet deadlines, work independently and effectively as part of a team, strong work ethic, superb judgment, and an enthusiastic approach to work
