About the role
The Assistant Digital Manager will serve as the Digital Manager's primary partner in executing a digital-first content strategy that grows audience, strengthens engagement, and reinforces WAVY's position as Hampton Roads' leading local news source.
Responsibilities
- Help lead the daily digital news operation, ensuring timely, accurate, engaging, and compelling coverage across all digital platforms.
- Serve as the day-to-day editorial leader for the digital desk during assigned shifts and when the Digital Manager is unavailable.
- Supervise, mentor, coach, and support Digital Content Producers while fostering a collaborative, high-performing team environment.
- Aid in scheduling, workflow management, onboarding, and performance feedback for digital staff.
- Cook up daily digital coverage with newsroom managers, assignment editors, reporters, photographers, producers, and meteorologists.
- Champion a digital-first newsroom culture by identifying opportunities for exclusive digital reporting, enterprise storytelling, and audience engagement.
- Monitor breaking news and make real-time editorial decisions regarding story placement, push alerts, live blogs, social coverage, and streaming content.
- Write, edit, and publish stories, headlines, videos, graphics, and social content that meet the highest journalistic standards.
- Develop compelling headlines and optimize content using SEO best practices to maximize audience reach.
- Monitor digital analytics, audience trends, and platform performance to help inform editorial strategy and identify growth opportunities.
- Coordinate live digital coverage during breaking news, severe weather, elections, and major community events.
- Ensure all digital content adheres to AP Style, journalistic ethics, copyright standards, legal guidelines, and Nexstar standards.
- Collaborate with television producers to extend broadcast content across digital platforms while identifying stories that should originate online first.
- Train newsroom employees on digital best practices, CMS workflows, SEO, social media strategy, and emerging storytelling tools.
- Stay informed on industry trends, audience behaviors, and new technologies to continuously improve the station's digital products.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- Three to five years of professional digital journalism or television newsroom experience.
- Previous experience leading projects, mentoring colleagues, or supervising newsroom staff preferred.
- Exceptional news judgment with the ability to make fast editorial decisions in a deadline-driven environment.
- Outstanding writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
- Expert knowledge of AP Style.
- Strong understanding of SEO, audience development, digital analytics, and social media strategy.
- Experience using content management systems, social publishing tools, and video editing platforms.
- Strong organizational, communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to multitask and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced newsroom.
- No telecommuting.
