About the role

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Assistant Controller to support the accounting and financial reporting functions of the organization. This role assists in managing the day-to-day accounting operations, ensuring accurate financial reporting, maintaining internal controls, and supporting month-end and year-end close processes. The ideal candidate possesses strong technical accounting knowledge, leadership skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Controller in overseeing daily accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger activities.
  • Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports.
  • Translate complex financial data into clear, actionable business insights that support strategic decision-making.
  • Support month-end and year-end closing processes, including account reconciliations and journal entries.
  • Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and company policies.
  • Assist in developing, maintaining, and monitoring internal controls and accounting procedures.
  • Coordinate and assist with external audits, tax filings, and regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Collaborate with operations and leasing departments to develop and enhance KPI reporting.
  • Lead presentations of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial analysis, explaining drivers of performance, risks, opportunities, and recommendations in an understandable manner for non-accounting audiences.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management processes.
  • Assist in managing fixed assets, accruals, and other accounting functions.
  • Provide leadership to 10+ member accounting team.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and increased operational efficiency.
  • Participate in special projects and perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • CPA designation preferred or in progress.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with supervisory experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting requirements.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting/ERP systems (Yardi preferred).
  • Experience with month-end close, reconciliations, and financial statement preparation.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including experience presenting financial analyses to non-financial audiences.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.

Skills

  • Experience in real estate or property management.
  • Experience in Yardi or similar real estate ERP.
  • Advanced Excel skills including pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, and financial modeling.
  • Demonstrated leadership and team development experience.

Pay

Salary Range: $125,000 – $150,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
