Assistant Conductor
Artistic Description
The New Amsterdam Singers, a 60-person avocational chorus based on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, is searching for a new Assistant Conductor to help with rehearsals, performances, section singing and musical preparation for its 2026-2027 season.
Role Summary
- Attend weekly rehearsals on Tuesday nights from 7:00-9:45pm
- Assist the Music Director with sectional rehearsals, warmups, and prepare a piece selected by the Music Director to lead in each concert performance
- Sing in their best-suited section within the chorus, to assist member singers in both rehearsals and in concert
- Be musically prepared to cover for the Music Director for all rehearsals and performances if needed
- Conduct rehearsals and/or sectional rehearsals as requested
- Provide instruction and feedback to singers on vocal production, and work in collaboration with the Music Director in helping to shape the ensemble’s sound
Requirements/Qualifications
- A degree in Music or Choral Conducting, or equivalent experience working with adult singers on advanced repertoire
- Demonstrated knowledge of vocal technique, vocal pedagogy and functional voice training for adult choral singers
- Experience conducting large ensembles of singers
- (Keyboard skills) Ability to play during a sectional rehearsal preferred
Employment Details
New Amsterdam Singers is a 501(c)(3) choral organization, which rehearses on Tuesday nights from 7:00-9:45pm between September and May, and holds 3 concert programs (2 concerts in December, 2 in March, and 2 in May). NAS sings mid- to advanced-level SATB repertoire ranging from Renaissance to Contemporary eras, and has a long history of premiering and commissioning pieces from living composers. The Assistant Conductor will be expected to attend all rehearsals and concerts, and help prepare the chorus as described above. This is a 1099 contractor position offered on a per-season basis, with a typical tenure of 1-3 seasons.
