Assistant Coach, Men's Basketball

About the role

The Assistant Coach for Men’s Basketball will contribute to the development of high-achieving student-athletes while gaining meaningful experience across all aspects of a competitive Ivy League basketball program. Reporting to the Head Coach, this position involves assisting with practices, individual workouts, skill-development sessions, and game preparation. The Assistant Coach will also work directly with student-athletes, participate in the identification and evaluation of prospective student-athletes, and support program operations.

Responsibilities

• Aid the Head Coach and coaching staff with the planning and execution of practices, individual workouts, skill-development sessions, and game preparation.
• Work directly with designated student-athletes or position groups to support individual skill development and overall performance.
• Assist with opponent scouting, film breakdown, game analysis, and the development of scouting reports and game plans.
• Participate actively in the identification, evaluation, and recruitment of prospective student-athletes in accordance with NCAA, Ivy League, and University requirements.
• Provide observations and recommendations related to player development, team strategy, personnel, and in-game adjustments.
• Support the coordination of program operations, including scheduling, team travel, equipment, and other logistical responsibilities.
• Build positive relationships with student-athletes and support their academic, athletic, and personal development.
• Aid in program and departmental initiatives, including fundraising, alumni engagement, and other responsibilities as assigned.
• Represent Brown University and Brown Athletics & Recreation with professionalism, integrity, and a commitment to the highest standards of conduct.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree and one to two years of coaching experience, or a minimum of five years of directly related experience in lieu of a bachelor’s degree.
• Strong knowledge of basketball fundamentals, techniques, strategies, and player development.

• Ability to evaluate student-athlete performance and provide constructive, development-focused feedback.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to build productive relationships with student-athletes, coaches, staff, prospective student-athletes, families, and other constituents.
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, competitive environment.
• Ability to work collaboratively as part of a coaching staff and contribute positively to team strategy, player development, and program operations.
• Ability to adapt to changing priorities and perform effectively in high-pressure and competitive situations.
• Ability and willingness to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and other nontraditional hours as required by the basketball season and recruiting calendar.
• Ability and willingness to travel for competition, recruiting, and other program responsibilities.
• Ability to maintain compliance with all Brown University, NCAA, and Ivy League rules, policies, and procedures.

Benefits

• Comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, retirement savings plan, and paid time off.

Pay

• $45,000 - $55,000 annually.

Schedule

• Part-time, 35 hours per week.
