Assistant Civil Engineer - Underground Submarine Cables (Chicago)

About the role

The Assistant Cables Engineer will work under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer to assist project teams in creating world-class designs for new projects, alterations, and redevelopments involving underground, trenchless, and/or submarine power cable lines. These cable lines may include low to medium voltage distribution and high voltage transmission. The role involves collaborating with the project team throughout the design and construction process, adapting power line plans according to budget constraints, design factors, or client needs.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the underground power line design of projects from the conceptual phase through design completion, incorporating electrical, civil, and mechanical principles.
• Modify and review production drawings for projects involving medium-to-high-voltage (13-500kV) power lines.
• Design power line components based on project requirements, including plan and profile drawings, structure load diagrams, and foundation drawings.
• Apply basic knowledge of civil and electrical engineering concepts, principles, practices, codes, and procedures.
• Research and compile project-related data as required by project managers, including studies and reports.
• Correct and update drawings provided by senior engineers using multiple CAD-related software.
• Assist with client presentations, shop drawing reviews, and contract administration for medium to high voltage power line designs.
• Perform field inspections, measurements, or calculations for public and private clients.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or a related degree from an ABET-accredited program or a Bachelor’s Degree in related Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited program with successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
• Prior internship and/or related consulting experience preferred.
• Basic knowledge of electrical power flow preferred.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment with demonstrated critical thinking skills.
• Proficient computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
• Basic distribution design software experience preferred.
• Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.
• Demonstrated leadership skills.
• Engineers in Training (EIT) Certification preferred.
• Minimum 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.
• Involvement on campus or in the community preferred.
• Must be legally authorized to work permanently in the country where this position is located without requiring work sponsorship.

Pay

Annual compensation range: $71,500.00 - $110,000.00. The total annual compensation package includes a base salary and eligibility to participate in a discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.

Schedule
