About the role
The Assistant Civil Engineer will work under the supervision of licensed professional engineers to assist our solid waste, water resources, and site/civil projects. This role will support our region’s Environmental Engineering Department, which includes our Kansas City (MO), Oklahoma City (OK), and Omaha (NE) offices. The ideal candidate will bring a positive attitude, thrive in a team-oriented environment, demonstrate a proactive commitment to collaboration, and possess strong fundamentals in civil/environmental engineering and permitting.
Projects may include, but are not limited to
- Solid Waste: Permitting, design, construction, and compliance support for solid waste infrastructure including monofills, landfills, transfer stations, material recovery facilities, etc.
- Site/Civil: Site grading and design, site stormwater modeling and design, design of other site utilities (water, wastewater, etc.), coal combustion residuals (CCR) project, dams and levees, etc.
- Water Resources: Riverine 1D and 2D modeling, floodplain permitting, stream bank stabilization, stream and wetland restoration, etc.
Job duties
- Assists in performing field inspections, measurements or calculations for public and private clients.
- Assists in the design of projects from the conceptual phase through design completion, along with permit preparation and coordination.
- Assist in preparing and reviewing construction drawings and construction quantity takeoffs using applicable standards and design data.
- Applies basic knowledge of commonly used civil/environmental engineering/design concepts, principles, practices, codes, and procedures within the environmental engineering services industry.
- Assists with research and compiles project related data as required by the project managers.
- Assists lead engineers with various project-related tasks (e.g., client presentations, schedules, submittals, requests for information, etc.).
- Assist with the organization and maintenance of project-related information in a clear and well-structured manner.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Complies with all policies and standards.
Qualifications
- Bachelor Degree in Civil, Environmental, or Biological Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program required; or Bachelor Degree in Civil or related Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam required.
- 1 – 3 years of related consulting experience preferred.
- Willingness to travel and work in the field.
- Basic knowledge in standard civil/environmental engineering techniques, principles and procedures.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.
- Proficient computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).
- Basic computer skills (e.g. AutoCAD Civil 3D, ArcGIS, and civil analysis programs).
- Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem solving skills.
- Demonstrated leadership skills.
- Engineers in Training-EIT Certification preferred.
- Minimum of a 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.
- Involvement on campus or in the community preferred.
- Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently (i.e., without time limitations, without restrictions or without need for work sponsorship) in the country where this position is located.
