Full-time position in San Diego, CA. Pay range: $20-$25 per hour, dependent on experience.

About the role

The Assistant Building Engineer provides support for the daily operation, maintenance, and repairs of all plumbing, electrical, fire-life-safety, and other common area building systems. This role requires developing a working knowledge of these systems to diagnose, repair, recommend maintenance, and implement preventative maintenance programs. Candidates must successfully pass a background check and adhere to all company employment policies, including anti-harassment and non-discrimination.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in ensuring the overall maintenance and safety of the property.
  • Maintain all equipment and building systems in accordance with manufacturer recommendations, industry standards, and as required.
  • Support the review of preventative maintenance programs and make recommendations to management.
  • Assist in ensuring compliance with all applicable codes and regulations from governmental agencies.
  • Order parts and supplies as necessary and maintain inventory of tools, equipment, and supplies.
  • Maintain Association maintenance records, including fire-life safety inspections, MSDS sheets, and service and inspection records.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Engineer, Building General or Assistant Managers, or Management team.

Skills

  • Willingness to learn all aspects of engineering, building, and systems maintenance.
  • General knowledge and ability to read building plans, including permit sets, shop drawings, as-builts, redlines, riser diagrams, single-line drawings, and isometrics.
  • Familiarity with HVAC systems, including service and controls.
  • Understanding of and ability to troubleshoot, repair, or coordinate repairs for electrical, mechanical, and plumbing systems in a high-rise environment.
  • Ability to multitask, adapt to sudden changes, and manage time efficiently.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects, exercise independent judgment, and work with confidential/sensitive information.
  • Strong follow-up skills and ability to adjust rapidly to unfamiliar environments.
  • Basic computer skills (knowledge of MS Office preferred).
  • Effective communication and relationship-building skills across all levels of the company.
  • Ability to patch, texture, and paint drywall is a plus.

Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Legally eligible to work in the United States.
  • Professional appearance.
  • Effective verbal and written communication in English.
  • Available for full-time hours, including on-call shifts.
  • Minimum three years of work experience in facility services/management, maintenance, and/or construction.
  • Participation in and/or conduction of weekly safety meetings.
  • Successful background check.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

  • Ability to lift/move 50 lbs.
  • Ability to operate necessary equipment and visually interpret data.
  • Ability to perform repetitive movements.
  • Ability to work in high areas and climb ladders.
  • Ability to crawl, kneel, bend, and twist the upper body and head.
  • Ability to manage potentially stressful situations effectively.
