Assistant - Basketball - San Francisco

About the Role

This is a seasonal, temporary part-time, non-exempt hourly position based on a school calendar and time-off schedule. The Assistant Coach reports to the Athletic Director and is actively engaged in the San Francisco Bayview Hunters Point community, embracing the mission and values of KIPP San Francisco College Preparatory.

Responsibilities

• Plan, organize, and direct the assigned team.
• Instruct and demonstrate skill sets and techniques necessary for individual and team development.
• Ensure that team rules and regulations regarding conduct and eligibility of the athletes are clearly communicated and followed.
• Plan, organize, advertise, and conduct tryouts for the sports program; inform the Athletic Department and participants of final selections while maintaining the integrity of the selection process.
• Consult with the Athletic Director regarding off-season training programs, including scheduling dates for summer camps/practices, uniform fitting, and pre/post tryout informational parent meetings.
• Create a safe environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
• Supervise athletes at all times during practices, transport to games, games, and until athletes have been picked up by guardians or make arrangements for public transportation.
• Model good sportsmanship behavior and maintain appropriate conduct towards opposing teams, fans, parents, officials, spectators, and the community.

Requirements

• 2 to 3 years of High School or Club Basketball coaching experience required.
• High school diploma or equivalent (Bachelor's degree preferred).
• Valid CA driver’s license (Class C) and current insurance coverage.
• Safe driving record (DMV report will be requested).
• Ability to follow and uphold the policies and mission statement of KIPP SFCP.
• Familiarity with the rules and regulations of the sports assigned.
• Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with faculty, staff, administrators, students, parents, and community members.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills; able to communicate effectively via email and phone.
• Access to reliable transportation throughout the Bay Area.
• Ability to work independently and within a small team.
• Ability to coach athletes of different skill levels.

Training

• Complete required safety training for basic first aid and injury prevention through SafeSchools and NFHS Learn, including:
  • Annually: mandated reporter, bloodborne pathogens, concussion in sports, sudden cardiac arrest, heat illness prevention (NFHS Learn).
  • Every two years: CPR and First Aid (CPR Certified).
  • At time of hire: Fundamentals of Coaching or certificate of completion from a previous sports season.

Physical, Mental, and Environmental Demands

• Physical: Ability to navigate office and school campuses, hold meetings in different spaces, and use technology. Occasional lifting/carrying of equipment (20–40 lbs).
• Mental: Ability to handle stress of deadlines, analyze problems, work with interruptions, concentrate for long periods, and perform routine tasks.
• Environmental: Work in gyms or fields with participants and spectators. Frequent travel (50%–70%) to gyms and fields throughout the Bay Area. Adhere to KIPP’s health and safety guidelines as outlined by the CDC, CDE, and public health agencies.

$19.61–$30 an hour.
