Professional entry-level position providing a variety of legal services, which may include civil, traffic, administrative, or criminal law.
Responsibilities
- Provide legal counsel and representation to the City and its departments, agencies, boards, officials, and employees.
- Perform legal research and draft memoranda, pleadings, briefs, contracts, ordinances, resolutions, legislation proposals, leases, deeds, purchase agreements, and administrative regulations and policies.
- Handle criminal and traffic prosecutions in Municipal Court on behalf of law enforcement agencies and victims of crimes.
- Render oral and written opinions as a legal representative before municipal and state common pleas and appeals courts.
- Manage plea negotiations, settlements, controversies, and claims.
- Stay informed of municipal, criminal, and related fields of law and fulfill Continuing Legal Education (CLE) requirements.
Requirements
- Juris Doctorate (J.D.) from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education through the North Central Association of Colleges and Universities or equivalent region.
- Member in good standing of the Ohio Bar or capable of becoming so within 6 months from date of appointment.
- Valid driver’s license at time of appointment and maintained thereafter as a condition of continued employment.
- Licensed to practice law in the State of Ohio within 6 months of appointment and maintained thereafter as a condition of continued employment.
Background Check
- Background investigation and evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity required prior to employment.
- Must pass applicable background investigation, including current city employees seeking transfer or promotion.
Medical Examination & Drug and Nicotine Testing
- Final appointment contingent upon passing a job-related medical examination including drug screen.
- Applicants offered employment must pass a nicotine screening and remain tobacco and nicotine-free as a condition of continued employment (policy does not apply to current City employees).
