About the Role

The Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources at West Virginia University (WVU) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in computer science with a focus on AI/ML. The appointment will be in the Lane Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering.

Specialty areas of interest include, but are not limited to, theory and applications of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in robotics, health, biometrics, and cybersecurity; autonomous systems, human-machine interface, and cyber-physical systems.

WVU is designated an R1 University (Highest Research Activity) by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. The Statler College has seven academic departments and approximately $51M in annual external research expenditures. The Lane Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering has 30 faculty members and approximately 700 undergraduate and 120 graduate students.

The successful candidate will benefit from resources offered by the Lane Department, Statler College, WVU Robotics Program, WVU Data Science Program, WVU Energy Institute, WVU Health Sciences Center (HSC), WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute (RNI), Biometrics Center, Cybersecurity Center, and the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL).

Research and Academic Environment

The WVU Robotics program has a strong track record, winning 9 national or international robotics competitions since 2011. Robotics faculty are engaged in research projects including F1Tenth, Smart City, Virtual and Augmented Reality, cybersecurity of Drones, and AI-based control.

The department offers a Bachelor of Science in Robotics Engineering in partnership with the Mechanical, Materials, and Aerospace Engineering (MMAE) department. It also conducts cutting-edge work in digital health.

WVU is designated by the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as a National Center of Academic Excellence in both Cyber Defense Research and Cyber Defense Education. WVU is a member of the USCYBERCOM academic engagement network (AEN) and the AFRL Information Institute.

WVU is the founding site of the multi-university Center for Identification Technology Research (CITeR), an NSF Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC) with opportunities for faculty working in biometrics, machine learning, and computer vision.

The Lane Department launched an undergraduate degree in Cybersecurity in 2018 and offers both undergraduate and graduate areas of emphasis in Cybersecurity. A recent NSF grant provides 120 annual scholarships over five years for undergraduates studying cybersecurity.

The department offers graduate areas of emphasis in:

  • Artificial Intelligence and Computational Data Science
  • Cyber-Physical and Complex Systems
  • Cybersecurity and Networked Systems
  • Microelectronics and Embedded Systems

The department also offers a certificate in Digital Health, a highly ranked online master’s in Software Engineering, and new online master’s programs in Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity.

Morgantown is located within a high-technology corridor that includes federal research facilities such as the NASA Katherine Johnson Independent Verification and Validation Facility (IV&V), U.S. Department of Energy's National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Responsibilities

  • Develop and sustain an independent, internationally recognized, and competitive externally-sponsored research program.
  • Collaborate effectively within multi-disciplinary teams of faculty and other researchers across WVU campus, other academic and government institutions, and the private sector.
  • Teach courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Perform professional service activities within and outside the university.

Requirements

  • Earned Doctorate degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a closely related field at the time of appointment.
  • Demonstrated ability or potential to develop a notable record of peer-reviewed publications and other scholarly activities.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Evidence of potential to attract competitive research funding.

  • Outstanding record of teaching, research, and service.
