Samuel Merritt University’s Basic Sciences Department seeks an Assistant Professor to deliver high-quality instruction in human anatomy, with preference given to candidates who can also teach neuroscience or physiology at the graduate level.

About the role

This annual, full-time, exempt faculty position is based on the Oakland campus and allocates approximately 80 % of time to teaching, 10 % to service, and 10 % to scholarship. The successful candidate will teach both lecture and laboratory components of human anatomy, physiology, and/or neuroscience in person and online, and will contribute to curriculum alignment, student mentoring, and departmental service.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to student learning, professional growth, and advancement.
  • Demonstrate academic competence in gross anatomy and collaborate with faculty, staff, and departments to align curricula.
  • Maintain a growth mindset toward student learning and teaching practice; adapt course content for different cohorts.
  • Demonstrate self-efficacy, accountability for learner outcomes, and advocacy for student success.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across the University to improve student performance.
  • Design and facilitate differentiated, personalized learning goals and activities aligned to instructional objectives.
  • Provide lecture-based and laboratory-based instruction in human anatomy, physiology, and/or neuroscience.
  • Teach in-person and online lectures and laboratories.
  • Perform departmental service by attending meetings.
  • Perform University service by joining committees and attending seminars, meetings, and trainings.
  • Conduct scholarship at the level required for promotion to the next rank.
  • Mentor students.

Requirements

  • Doctoral degree (PhD, MD, DPM, Ed.D, or equivalent) in Anatomy or a closely related discipline; clinical doctors may apply.
  • Candidates with an M.S. degree may be considered based on teaching experience.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience teaching human gross anatomy; graduate-level experience preferred.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience teaching human gross anatomy dissection; graduate-level experience preferred.
  • Ability to teach Neuroanatomy or Physiology at the graduate level is preferred.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds; ability to carry, push, pull, kneel, and stoop.
  • Ability to move about campus to accomplish instructional and service tasks.
  • Must be able to teach in person at the Oakland campus and/or online live.
  • Ability to read, write, compose, and edit complex documents.
  • Ability to perform deskwork and computer work for prolonged periods.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to receive and interpret detailed information through verbal and written communication.

Pay

Salary range: $108,000 – $120,000 per year, depending on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other relevant factors.
