Assistant/Associate/Full Professor or Clinical Lecturer/Senior Lecturer and Medical Director

Two Medical Director positions are available at the UF College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) for the UF Veterinary Hospitals (UFVH). The Medical Director oversees small animal clinicians at the UF Veterinary Hospitals' West End Clinic (WEC), including emergency, primary care, and urgent care staff or faculty veterinarians, ensuring veterinary care aligns with the college and university mission.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, coordinates, and oversees day-to-day services and clinical operations for small animal practice at WEC.
  • Oversees activities of clinicians (ER single mission track faculty and WEC small animal staff veterinarians).
  • Ensures high standards of medical care and client communications consistent with UFVH’s mission.
  • Assists in investigating patient safety events and client complaints.
  • Provides direct advice to the Associate Dean of Clinical Services (ADCS – SA/LA) and Chief Medical Officer (CMO) on clinical services, policies, and personnel concerns.
  • Assists in developing and implementing strategic initiatives and projects.
  • Participates in developing, implementing, and maintaining policies, objectives, standards of care, and procedural protocols.
  • Maintains intrahospital communications (between clinician groups at WEC and the main hospital in Gainesville) and referring veterinarian (rDVM) communications.
  • Assists in client relations for WEC patients/clients.
  • Oversees or develops specific programs at WEC, such as small animal infection control.
  • Ensures compliance with federal/state veterinary practice regulations and college/university policies.

Requirements

  • DVM, VMD, or equivalent foreign veterinary degree.
  • At least three years of clinical experience.
  • Active clinician in the UFVH at the rank of Clinical Lecturer/Senior Lecturer or Assistant Professor or higher (clinical or tenure track).

Classification Minimum Requirements

  • Assistant Professor: Holds the highest degree appropriate to their field or equivalent qualifications based on professional experience. Demonstrates successful experience pertinent to the position and qualities relevant to the academic unit’s goals.
  • Associate Professor: Holds the highest degree appropriate to their field or professional qualifications above those equivalent to the highest degree. Demonstrates creative work, professional writing, or research, and successful teaching or professional experience. Requires a distinguished record of achievement beyond the assistant professor level.
  • Professor: Qualified for the rank of associate professor and recognized as a national or international authority or outstanding teacher in their field. Requires a distinguished record of achievement beyond the associate professor level.
  • Lecturer: Holds the academic degree appropriate to the assignment or equivalent experiences/accomplishments.
  • Senior Lecturer: Holds the academic degree appropriate to the assignment or equivalent experiences/accomplishments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing veterinary hospital clinical staff in an academic or private setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise professional employees effectively.

Additional Information

This position reports to the department chair for faculty assignment (75% SACS/CDPM) and the ADCS (LA/SA) for the Medical Director assignment (25% SAH). The department chair and ADCS will determine the specific administrative FTE. The department chair completes the annual evaluation with input from the CMO on administrative duties. The term for this Medical Director position is 3 years, with potential for renewal.
