Assistant Aquatics Manager

About the role

This exempt, full-time position reports to the Aquatics Manager and is responsible for the planning, development, and implementation of instructional, recreation, fitness, and therapeutic aquatics programs, sports, and special events at Farmington Municipal Pools.

Responsibilities

  • Perform administrative duties for aquatics programs, including scheduling, coordination, and supervision of staff (shift supervisors, lifeguards, instructors, coaches).
  • Serve as liaison between the City and external programs using the facility.
  • Organize and run American Red Cross swimming lessons and other Red Cross programs; conduct lifeguard and instructor training per Red Cross and facility standards.
  • Plan, develop, schedule, and supervise aquatics activities to meet community recreation, fitness, and therapeutic needs; coordinate staff in program development and implementation.
  • Supervise classes, workshops, and special events for co-sponsored and aquatics programs; prepare lesson plans, expand existing programs, and develop new water activities.
  • Track program statistics, complete record sheets, assist with grant applications/renewals, and inventory equipment and supplies.
  • Communicate with the Aquatics Manager to advocate for staff, facility, and participant needs; with approval, cancel or reschedule classes, programs, and events as assigned.
  • Plan and organize workloads and staff assignments; assist with pool and interactive fountain maintenance, including water balance, filtration systems, and pump room duties.
  • Prepare and distribute promotional materials (brochures, calendars, posters, news releases, flyers) and organize support groups for aquatic activities.
  • Operate a City vehicle to conduct department business.
  • Assist with annual budget preparation, handle cash register transactions, and perform custodial/cleaning and minor maintenance duties.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in recreation or a closely related field, plus two years of experience managing, operating, and maintaining aquatic facilities; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid New Mexico driver’s license with an acceptable three-year driving record (or current state of residency).
  • Current American Red Cross First Aid, CPR/AED certification.
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification.
  • Knowledge of pool chemistry, filtration and chemical injection systems, OSHA and EID regulations, and the Model Aquatic Health Code.
  • Ability to prepare and teach instructional, recreational, fitness, and therapeutic swimming classes and enforce safety/health regulations.
  • Ability to develop, coordinate, and direct varied community recreation activities; plan and supervise staff and volunteers; work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work varied shifts including weekends and holidays; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; interact positively with the public and personnel.
  • Subject to the City’s Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace Program (pre-employment, post-accident, random, reasonable suspicion, return-to-duty, and follow-up testing).
  • Extensive background checks required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Pool Operator or Aquatic Facility Operator.
  • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor/Trainer and Lifeguarding Instructor/Trainer certifications.
  • Knowledge of U.S. Swimming and Diving rules and regulations.

Notes on Certifications

If you do not hold the preferred instructor/trainer certifications, you must obtain American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguarding Instructor/Trainer within six months, and Water Safety Instructor Trainer within two years.
