About the role
To strengthen Michigan families, the Eligibility Specialist ensures each applicant receives the correct public assistance, assesses needs, provides information, makes referrals, and guides families toward self-sufficiency.
Responsibilities
- Ensures applicants receive the right type and level of assistance based on eligibility
- Assesses needs and provides appropriate information and referrals
- Shares expectations and goals of MDHHS with families
- Encourages and guides families towards self-sufficiency
Requirements
- At least two years of college (60 semester or 90 term credits)
- At least four years of administrative support experience in a human services or office setting, including two years equivalent to the experienced (E7) level
- At least one year of college (30 semester or 45 term credits) and at least three years of administrative support experience in a human services or office setting, including one year equivalent to the experienced (E7) level
- At least three years of Home Aide experience, including one year equivalent to a Home Aide E8
Qualifications
- Current MDHHS employee classified as an Assistance Payments Worker interested in moving to the same class and level at this location
- Status as a current Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) employee, MDHHS employee in layoff status, current State of Michigan (non-MDHHS) employee, or State of Michigan (non-MDHHS) employee in layoff status
- No disciplinary suspensions within the last two years
- No convictions of felonies or misdemeanors
- No intentional program violations from the Department of Health and Human Services
- No objection to being fingerprinted or drug tested
- No substantiated cases of abuse or neglect reported on the Department of Human Services Central Registry
- Experience working with a volatile population of 5 years or more
- Experience navigating between different programs or applications (such as Microsoft Office and/or automated systems) and obtaining and processing necessary information
Skills
Strong interpersonal skills, ability to work independently, and proficiency in Microsoft Office and automated systems.

The physical location of this position could be Benzie DHHS, Manistee DHHS, or Mason DHHS. Based on operational needs and within established limits, remote work and alternate or hybrid work schedule requests for this position may be considered.
