Assignment Desk Editor I

About the Role

The Assignment Desk Editor I hires camera crews and arranges feeds and transfer of content. They strategize and organize the movement of IP-based transmission devices for coverage, coordinating the efforts of freelance and staff producers and associated production/technical personnel to provide video and audio sports/news material for ESPN platforms.

This role handles ancillary crew needs such as parking, credentials, Ethernet, phone lines, and permits, while understanding basic rights and clearances issues. The editor participates in strategic editorial and logistical planning of coverage and acts as the liaison between the Assignment Desk and Media Assets, Media Operations, and Transmission.

Shifts include nights and weekends, and the position may be based in CT or CA.

Responsibilities

• Hire freelance ENG crews.
• Assign and coordinate movement of IP-based transmission devices.
• Clear social media content for ESPN platforms.
• React immediately to breaking news and requests; pursue story-related materials (sound and video) in a timely manner.
• Collaborate with ABC NewsOne/ABC affiliates and other networks on breaking news stories, sharing information, video, and sound.
• Gather and enter transmission information (satellite, fiber, cable) for televised games.
• Gather and communicate content for use on ESPN platforms, working with ESPN staff, vendors, social media, affiliates, and other networks.
• Coordinate efforts of production and technical personnel to ensure smooth coverage.
• Serve as a liaison between the Assignment Desk and other departments (Media Assets, Media Operations, Transmission).
• Stay informed and up-to-date on sporting events with above-average sports knowledge.

Requirements

• Minimum of 3 years of experience in a television-related field.
• High School Diploma or equivalent (required).
• Bachelor’s Degree in a related field (preferred).
• Depth of knowledge in fiber, satellite, cellular, FTP, and viral newsgathering procedures.
• Ability to work well in a team setting, showing initiative and problem-solving skills.
• Strong organizational and prioritization abilities.
• Commitment to accuracy and attention to detail.
• Working knowledge of television production, electronic and social media newsgathering, and Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Excel, Word).

Preferred Qualifications

• Superior interpersonal and communication skills, with the capacity to handle high-volume email and phone traffic.
• Demonstrated initiative and a positive, solution-oriented outlook.
• Advanced ability to organize and prioritize.
• Strong knowledge of sports.

Pay

The hiring range for this position in Bristol, CT, or Hollywood Park, CA, is $49,200 to $66,000 per year based on a 40-hour work week. The base pay offered will consider internal equity and may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to medical, financial, and other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.

Schedule

Shifts include nights and weekends. The amount of hours scheduled per week may vary based on business needs.
