Asphalt/Paving Laborer

Priority of service is given to Veterans for the first 24 hours after posting. Pay rates vary by project; certain projects are subject to Davis-Bacon prevailing wage requirements and may pay substantially more than the standard base rate. The standard starting pay rate for laborer positions is $17.00 per hour.

About the role

The Asphalt/Paving Laborer performs a variety of tasks supporting asphalt paving, roadway construction, maintenance, and repair operations. This position assists paving crews by preparing surfaces, placing and finishing asphalt, maintaining traffic control devices, and ensuring a safe and productive work environment.

Responsibilities

• Assist with roadway, highway, parking lot, and asphalt paving operations.
• Prepare project areas for paving activities.
• Shovel, rake, lute, and spread asphalt materials.
• Assist paving machine, roller, and screed operators.
• Clean and prepare joints, edges, and surfaces prior to paving.
• Perform asphalt patching and roadway maintenance activities.
• Set up and maintain traffic control devices and work zones.
• Load, unload, and transport materials, tools, and equipment.
• Operate hand and power tools as directed.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area.

Requirements

• Ability to follow directions and work as part of a team.
• Ability to perform physically demanding labor in hot environments.
• Basic knowledge of construction tools and equipment.
• Ability to work safely around paving equipment and moving traffic.
• Ability to work up to 15 hours per day during peak season.
• Strong work ethic, reliability, and attendance.
• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Previous asphalt paving or construction experience preferred but not required.
• Traffic control experience is a plus.

Physical Requirements

• Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds at times.
• Must be able to stand, walk, and perform physical labor for extended periods.
• Exposure to outdoor weather conditions, dust, and loud machinery.
• Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).

Pay

$17.00 per hour (standard starting rate).
