About the Role

Drivers will operate commercial vehicles to transport and distribute materials and equipment for road construction and maintenance operations. In support of teamwork, drivers may also assist as laborers and operators on paving or chipping crews, as well as on special assignments or projects as directed by management.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and conduct oil spraying on roads
  • Operate valve to regulate flow of material at specified rate and adjust levers to adjust height of spray bar
  • Maintain appropriate DOT logs and assigned paperwork
  • Assist with preparing roads for surfacing
  • Perform daily inspections on assigned equipment and report defects or repairs to the Equipment Division
  • Ensure equipment is clean and well-maintained

Requirements

  • Commercial Driver’s License – Class A or B; Hazmat Endorsement may be required depending on the role and equipment
  • Knowledge of vehicle regulations and safe operation
  • Ability to maneuver and control the vehicle safely, including signaling, hazard detection, speed control, and lane positioning
  • Ability to back trucks in tight spaces, through manufacturing areas, and around high pedestrian traffic
  • Safety-conscious with the ability to follow safety procedures
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to work varied shifts and long hours during peak operation times (spring, summer, and fall)
  • Ability to work in inclement weather (extreme heat or cold)
  • Ability to perform heavy manual tasks

  • Control Precision: Ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust vehicle controls to exact positions, operating under varying conditions
  • Communication: Ability to provide information to supervisors and co-workers via telephone, written forms, or in person. Must represent the organization favorably to customers, the public, DOTs, and other external sources. Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions
  • Dependability: Must be reliable, responsible, and fulfill obligations
  • Teamwork/Cooperation: Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public. Must be sensitive to others’ needs and helpful on the job
  • Adaptability/Flexibility: Must be open to change and variety in the workplace

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to:

  • Perform sedentary work, sitting a majority of the time, while occasionally exerting up to ten pounds of force
  • Work in a field-based environment with limited exposure to chemicals, fumes, dust, odors, gases, and other substances common in construction
  • See, hear, talk, and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity
  • Operate standard office equipment, including computers, copiers, fax machines, and phones
