Ash Landfill Site Inspector

About the role

Field technician/analyst to oversee environmental compliance and construction at coal combustion residuals (CCR) landfills in the state of MI. Landfills are located near Muskegon, Holland, Bay City, and Monroe, MI. Two landfills are still open and operating; the others are closed but have a 30-year post-closure monitoring period.

This position will oversee and ensure contracted entities complete compliance obligations related to maintenance, monitoring, inspections, surveying, and other engineering support. Additionally, the role involves developing and maintaining records, supporting report development, and—at active landfills—overseeing closure work and new cell construction while reporting progress to the Landfill Program Manager.

The candidate will also assist in quality assurance by auditing the activities of third-party engineers during inspections, surveying, sampling, testing, and reporting in a format acceptable to the agency having jurisdiction.

Responsibilities

• Oversee contracted entities to ensure compliance with maintenance, monitoring, inspections, surveying, and engineering support obligations.
• Develop and maintain records related to landfill operations and compliance.
• Support the development of compliance reports.
• Oversee closure work and new cell construction at active landfills; report progress to the Landfill Program Manager.
• Audit third-party engineers’ activities, including inspections, surveying, sampling, and testing.
• Ensure reporting meets agency requirements.

Requirements

• High school diploma required; Associate degree in a Technical/Construction field is a plus.
• 3–5 years of relevant experience in a similar role preferred.
• Ability to read and interpret civil and environmental drawings and construction documents.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to prioritize and manage multiple daily activities.
