GENERAL SUMMARY

The Medical Assistant supports the delivery of urological services, performs work as required and functions as an effective member of the interdisciplinary team. The Medical Assistant is tasked to perform routine administrative and clinical tasks to keep the medical offices running smoothly. This position collaborates/work with staff within their practice or other professional disciplines within the affiliated medical groups as needed to achieve effective and efficient patient care delivery and the desired patient outcomes.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION/COMPETENCIES

  • Performs various administrative and clinical duties under the direction of their assigned direct supervisor.
  • Confers with physicians, nursing, and other staff members to coordinate and schedule appointments of patients.
  • Greets and prepares patients.
  • Makes measurements and records vital signs.
  • Records patient interview, history, and chief complaint.
  • Provides patient education with regards to medications, management of diseases, home treatments and special diets.
  • Prepares patients for examinations and performs routine screening tests.
  • Affords assistance to physicians during exams.
  • Collects blood samples and performs basic laboratory tests.
  • Performs electrocardiograms (EKG).
  • Affords assistance with X-rays and physician therapy procedures.
  • Administers medications with physician authorization.
  • Changes dressings, applies bandages, removes sutures, and performs other first aid procedures.
  • Utilizes CPR skills when necessary.
  • Produces accurate, legal, and ethical documentation at all times.
  • Opens office in the morning and closes in the afternoon.
  • Assists in maintaining patient logs for lab requests, CT scans, and other treatment orders.
  • Maintains prescription ledger when needed.
  • Ensures the back office has good flow, keeps rooms full, and assists with room turnover.
  • Completes new patient thorough work-ups (x-rays, vitals, new patient packet explanation).
  • Adds medical history on all new patients and updates all established patients' history accurately.
  • Ensures accurate and complete room setup for physician.
  • Ensures that all patients' medication is updated before the physician's visit.
  • Handles set-up for in-office surgical procedures.
  • Ensures appropriate consent forms are completed correctly, avoiding the use of too many medical abbreviations within the consent forms.
  • Scribes as assigned per physician office flow.
  • Prepares for seeing patients the following day, including patient confirmation for next day visit.
  • Completes patient medical record requests when necessary.
  • Affords assistance in the orientation and training of new personnel.
  • Ensures proper handoff of responsibilities once their task is completed.
  • Mets established attendance criteria and starts work promptly. Punctual and dependable for assigned/confirmed shifts.
  • Respects and acknowledges the organization's commitment to cultural diversity, which is expressed through behavior, language, and actions.
  • Consistently demonstrates good use of time and resources.
  • Adheres to HR, & Corporate policies and procedures.
  • Ensures that all medical records are accurate and complete for all patients.
  • Ensures compliance of healthcare regulations, medical laws, and high ethical standards.
  • Regularly adheres and supports compliance and accreditation efforts as assigned including, but not limited to OSHA, HIPAA & CMS guidelines for Parts C & D on General Compliance and Fraud, Waste & Abuse.

  • Knowledge in healthcare systems operations such as EMR, Practice Management Solutions.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple deadlines.

  • Vendor relations (for those MA’s that are required to order office and clinical supplies).
  • Database management.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Skill in using computer programs and applications including Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Delivers exceptional patient service throughout all interactions.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Complies with HIPAA regulations for patient confidentiality.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Graduate of a Medical Assistant program or equivalent experience (based on State regulation requirements).

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • 6 months experience working within a physician’s office desired.
  • Urology experience desired.

REQUIRED TRAVEL

  • Minimal travel required.
