Asbestos Technician

About the role

This position provides operational support in mitigation efforts for clients, including asbestos removal and disposal using specialized equipment under supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Take direction from Team Leader
  • Learn and understand MSDS protocols for chemicals used during mitigation processes
  • Perform daily vehicle safety and maintenance inspections; maintain vehicles in clean, serviceable condition
  • Maintain attention to detail
  • Comply with prescribed safety procedures or federal laws regulating waste disposal methods
  • Record operational or environmental data
  • Sort specialized hazardous waste at landfills or disposal centers, following proper disposal procedures
  • Drive trucks or other heavy equipment to convey contaminated waste to designated sea or ground locations
  • Operate truck-mounted equipment
  • Load or unload materials into containers or onto trucks, using hoists or forklifts
  • Load or unload materials used in construction or extraction
  • Clean mold-contaminated sites by removing damaged porous materials or thoroughly cleaning all contaminated nonporous materials
  • Decontaminate equipment or sites to remove hazardous or toxic substances
  • Operate machines or equipment to remove, package, store, or transport loads of waste materials
  • Prepare hazardous waste for processing or disposal
  • Process e-waste, such as computer components containing lead or mercury
  • Use proper cleaning/disinfectant solutions and removal techniques of debris from contained areas
  • Use proper lifting techniques, slide pads, Styrofoam blocks; care for and protect customer personal belongings
  • Safeguard other people's property according to BELFOR Standards
  • Work under time constraints to meet specific timelines
  • Work nights and weekends as requested, and travel periodically
  • Report time worked and equipment and consumables used timely and accurately
  • Attend BELFOR-sponsored operations and safety training courses as required
  • Build containment areas prior to beginning abatement or decontamination work
  • Assemble temporary equipment or structures
  • Remove asbestos or lead from surfaces, using hand or power tools such as scrapers, vacuums, or high-pressure sprayers
  • Maintain equipment used in daily tasks
  • Perform additional duties as required

Requirements

  • Ability to identify product (consumables), usage, and disposal requirements with training
  • Asbestos Certification with Medical Card
  • Current Lead Certification
  • Current Hazardous Waste Certification
  • Eligible to operate a motor vehicle per BELFOR's vehicle policy
  • Sense of urgency, professional demeanor, positive attitude, and strong work ethic
  • English language literacy and fluency

Physical Demands

  • Frequent lifting in excess of 50 lbs
  • Occasional assisted lifting from 41 lbs+ (up to 50% of the time)
  • Access and mobility in tight spaces
  • Sustained periods of standing, sitting, walking, bending, and kneeling
  • Ability to use mobile devices for data and time collection
