Artificial Intelligence Consultant, DPS, Austin, Tx

Primary work location: 5805 N Lamar Blvd, Austin, TX 78752. Must reside within 300 miles or 3-4 hours of work location and report to the office at least one day per month as designated by DPS. W-2 employment with benefits; must be a US citizen, EAD, or Green Card holder.

Schedule

Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, excluding State holidays. Some nights and weekends as needed.

Responsibilities

• Build and deploy components of the enterprise search tool.
• Assist with the configuration, rollout, and documentation of the Darwin AI inventory system.
• Support implementation and testing of AI agents aligned to business unit needs.
• Develop technical controls, documentation, and processes required for AI governance adoption.
• Work on four major DPS initiatives:
  • Implement an enterprise search solution to improve information retrieval across DPS systems.
  • Deploy the AI inventory and monitoring system (Darwin).
  • Develop and operationalize AI agents to improve internal efficiency and public-facing services.
  • Establish and enforce AI governance to ensure compliance with cybersecurity, privacy, and statewide technology policies.

Requirements

• Minimum of one year of experience in each of the following:
  • Building and deploying components of an enterprise search tool.
  • Configuring, rolling out, and documenting an AI inventory system (e.g., Darwin).
  • Supporting implementation and testing of AI agents aligned to business needs.
  • Developing technical controls, documentation, and processes for AI governance adoption.
• Hybrid work arrangement (on-site and telework) with occasional work outside normal business hours, including weekends and holidays.
• All work products are considered "works made for hire" and become the property of the Texas Department of Public Safety.
• Must satisfy criminal background checks as authorized by Texas law.
• Travel, per diem, parking, and living expenses are the candidate's responsibility unless pre-approved in writing by DPS.
• Overtime work must be pre-approved and will be compensated at the hourly rate.
