To develop students' interest, abilities, talents, and skills for artistic expression and creativity in the visual arts, as well as aesthetic understanding and appreciation by implementing district-approved curriculum. Helps students learn subject matter and skills that contribute to their development as mature, able, and responsible individuals.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and administers school art curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
  • Creates lesson plans and instructional materials, translating them into engaging learning experiences.
  • Teaches knowledge and skills in art, including crafts, drawing, painting, lettering, design, commercial art, art history, and three-dimensional art to secondary pupils.
  • Provides instruction that helps students develop aesthetic concepts, appreciation, and the ability to make qualitative judgments about art.
  • Conducts ongoing assessments of student skills and learning, modifying instruction to meet individual needs, including those of students with special needs.
  • Demonstrates techniques in activities such as drawing, painting, and modeling using standard and teacher-prepared instructional aids.
  • Organizes class time to provide a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and working time.
  • Instructs pupils in the proper care and use of tools and equipment used in art classes.
  • Evaluates student performance and growth in knowledge and aesthetic understandings, preparing progress reports.
  • Plans and presents art displays and exhibitions to showcase student work within the school and community.
  • Continues professional development by attending seminars, workshops, or professional meetings and conducting research.
  • Maintains accurate and complete records of student activities, achievement, and attendance as required by district procedures.
  • Encourages parental involvement and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to achieve a functional learning atmosphere.
  • Coordinates with other professional staff members and participates in faculty meetings and committees.
  • Selects and requisitions appropriate books, art materials, instructional aids, and other supplies while maintaining inventory records.
  • Develops lesson plans utilizing the NIET Best Practice Instructional Rubric to ensure effective instruction and participates in professional development.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of current art instructional teaching methods and educational pedagogy, including differentiated instruction based on student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of art curriculum and concepts.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  • Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work effectively.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation regarding performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

Qualifications

  • Current Indiana Teacher’s License in the subject area applicable to teaching assignment.
  • BA degree in Fine Arts.
  • Two years of work experience as an Art Teacher.

Schedule

Standard teacher work schedule as set forth in the Teachers' Contract.
