About the role

The Art Teacher at Detroit Academy of Arts and Sciences is responsible for inspiring creativity, critical thinking, and artistic expression in students through high-quality visual arts instruction. The position integrates the school's mission to provide a well-rounded education in the arts and sciences.

Responsibilities

  • Create engaging and developmentally appropriate lesson plans aligned with the school's curriculum, Common Core, and state standards.
  • Create a positive and inclusive classroom environment that fosters a love for learning, respectful behavior, and a sense of community among students.
  • Tailor teaching methods to accommodate diverse learning styles and abilities, ensuring each student's unique needs are met.
  • Affirmatively assess student progress through a variety of formative and summative assessments.
  • Provide constructive feedback to students and communicate progress to parents/guardians.
  • Work collaboratively with fellow teachers, administrators, and support staff to enhance the overall educational experience and contribute to the school's positive and collaborative culture.
  • Establish and maintain open communication with parents/guardians through regular updates, conferences, and involvement in school events.
  • Stay informed about current educational trends, participate in professional development opportunities, and continuously seek ways to enhance teaching skills and knowledge.
  • Actively participate in the Teaching and Learning Cycle which requires analyzing data, completing action plans, delivering re-teach lessons and reflecting on the instructional learning cycle;
  • Contribute to a professional environment that is one of mutual respect, teamwork, and accountability;
  • Adhere to the District’s and School’s policies, expectations, and protocols as outlined in the District’s Policies and Procedures Manual and School’s Procedures Manual.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education or a related field.
  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certification with Endorsement for desired content area.
  • LQ: Visual Arts Education LX: Fine Arts LZ: Visual Arts Specialist.
  • Previous experience teaching elementary school students strongly preferred.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • Strong understanding of child development, pedagogy, and effective instructional strategies.
  • Passion for integrating arts into the curriculum and promoting creativity in the classroom.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office and the Google Suite.
  • Commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment for all students.
  • Ability to adapt to a dynamic educational environment and contribute to a positive school culture.

Benefits

The salary range for certified teachers starts at $51,300. Terms of employment include the length of the work year and hours of employment as established by the District.

Pay

$51,300 - $83,700 / year

Schedule

Salary & benefits shall be paid consistent with the District's approved compensation plan. The salary range for certified teachers starts at $51,300. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the District.
