About the role

The Art Instructor will assist the artWorks Supervisor with providing person-centered planning and a safe environment for artists by introducing and facilitating the creation of art through a variety of media. This role supports adults with disabilities in developing vocational skills while producing sellable art.

Responsibilities

  • Work hands-on with artists to motivate and stimulate creativity, innovation, and independent problem-solving to help artists reach their highest potential in their art career path.
  • Support progress through positive reinforcement; model positive employment behaviors and give constructive feedback.
  • Enable artists to be as independent and self-sufficient as possible.
  • Maintain knowledge of current trends in art in the community.
  • Keep accurate and up-to-date progress notes.
  • Instruct artists in the proper care and use of tools and supplies.
  • Develop and implement lesson plans for small and large group instruction.
  • Assist in hanging and presenting artists' completed artwork.
  • Participate in art shows and events to promote the artists' work.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety protocols.
  • Attend to the personal care needs of individuals served.
  • Protect recipient rights and confidentiality in accordance with agency policy and the Mental Health Code.
  • Actively participate in and be knowledgeable about culturally competent, recovery-based practices, person-centered planning, and trauma-informed culture.
  • Complete incident reports and daily progress notes in compliance with Medicaid & CARF standards.
  • Assist the artWorks Supervisor with organizing and storing supplies, problem-solving incidents, and implementing clinical strategies.
  • Provide volunteer orientation and assist volunteers in working effectively with artists.
  • Assist customers in the storefront, including greeting customers, making sales, and handling monies collected.
  • Participate in artists' person-centered planning meetings.
  • Perform other miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum one year of education and/or experience in the visual arts with the ability to provide artistic guidance and direction in a wide variety of art media.
  • Education and/or experience working with individuals with disabilities or related populations strongly preferred.
  • Ability to balance the mission of independence with the objective of producing artwork with market value.
  • Knowledge of Person-Centered Planning preferred.
  • Lived experiences with behavioral health are desired.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Effective in providing motivation and innovation when working with artists.
  • Problem-solving skills and judgment sufficient to recognize and initiate appropriate responses to emergency and non-emergency situations independently.
  • Ability to work unsupervised.
  • Flexible schedule to accommodate some evening and weekend activities.
  • Completion of certified trainings (e.g., CPR, MANDT) upon hire.
  • Criminal records, driving, and recipient rights screening required.
  • Valid Michigan driver’s license, good driving record, and availability of a licensed, insured vehicle for use on the job.

Skills

  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to physically intervene when needed.
  • Visual discrimination to differentiate between colors.

Work Conditions

  • Retail store and art studio environment.
  • May be exposed to bloodborne pathogens, infectious diseases, and parasites.

Pay

Pay range midpoint: $19.25 per hour, with a maximum of $22.50 per hour.
