Position Overview
The Art Instructor leads a safe, engaging, and supportive after-school classroom environment for high school students through visual arts instruction, facilitation, and program coordination.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Lead and manage a classroom of approximately 10–20 high school students in a safe, engaging, and structured after-school environment
- Plan, adapt, and deliver visual arts enrichment lessons that support creativity, skill-building, and self-expression
- Facilitate life skills and team-building activities that promote collaboration, confidence, and positive youth development
- Engage in weekly check-ins and participate in staff meetings
- Maintain a positive, safe, productive work environment
- Participate in supporting special events and field trips
- Attend training and professional development opportunities
- Perform additional relevant duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Commitment to BGCP’s mission and vision and working with high school youth
- Experience building relationships with diverse youth communities and constituents
- Ability to motivate through positive reinforcement
- Strong communication skills
- Flexible in navigating a fast-paced environment
- Preferred one year of experience working with high school aged youth
- Spanish fluency is a plus
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
- Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling
- Sometimes climbing and balancing
- Sometimes stooping, kneeling, bending at the waist, reaching overhead, crouching, squatting, and/or crawling
- Significant fine finger dexterity and near vision acuity
- Lifting or carrying objects up to 25 pounds
- Generally, the job requires approximately 20% sitting and 80% walking or standing
- The work environment noise level is typically moderate but may occasionally be louder
Location and Schedule
- Redwood City, CA
- Monday through Friday 2:30pm - 7:00pm (25-29 hours/week)
- Occasional Saturdays (9/5, 9/12, 9/19, 9/26, 10/3, 10/10, 10/17, 11/7, 11/14, 11/21)
Compensation & Benefits
- Employment Status: Part Time - Non-Exempt
- Pay Range: $25.00 - $30.00, depending on experience (DOE)
- Retirement Benefits: BGCP offers salary contributions to the 401(k) plan
- Sick Time: Part-time employees accrue sick time at a rate of 1 hour for every 20 hours worked, and may use up to 40 hours per year
