Art Director
About the role
The Atlantic is seeking an art director to join its newsroom. This individual will create original illustrations for The Atlantic, focusing on daily coverage and digital features. They will also commission and art direct assignments. The role may occasionally involve special projects and the magazine.
Responsibilities
- Create original illustrations for The Atlantic, covering daily coverage and digital features.
- Commission and art direct assignments as needed.
- Occasionally work on special projects and the magazine.
- Bring an editorial voice through illustration and design, while being open to thinking outside the box.
- Work independently and collaboratively to complete tasks.
- Ensure all work meets The Atlantic’s design, production, and editorial standards.
- Occasionally work later nights, weekends, and early mornings.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience working in editorial design, illustration, digital media, or related fields.
- Mastery of Adobe Creative Cloud, with experience in motion graphics and video editing preferred.
- Familiarity with Figma.
- A close attention to detail and the ability to multitask.
- Clear and concise communication skills.
- Experience in journalism or a news-related environment strongly preferred.
Qualifications
- Deep understanding of illustration and design for digital platforms.
- Enthusiasm for working in a fast-paced news environment.
- Highly skilled in digital and traditional mediums.
- Detail-oriented, ensuring all work meets The Atlantic’s standards.
Pay
Minimum: $85,000
Maximum: $100,000
Schedule
Occasional later night, weekend, and early morning work.
