Armed Security Officer: Night Shift 11pm-7am

Purpose and Scope of Responsibility

The Armed Security Officer is responsible for carrying out the goals and mission of Bethel University and the Department of Safety and Security. This person patrols, secures, and protects the university campus to ensure a safe work and educational environment for all students, staff, faculty, and campus visitors. The position is based at the main campus in McKenzie, Tennessee, but officers may be required to perform duties at off‑campus properties or other campus locations.

Schedule

Responsible for one shift, 8 hours per day, 5 days per week. Incumbents are subject to overtime as deemed necessary.

Responsibilities

• Engage in direct interactions and build relationships with the campus community—including students, staff, and faculty—to encourage a safe and positive campus environment.
• Conduct regular and random patrols around the campus and through campus facilities, by vehicle and on foot, maintaining alertness for any signs of abnormal conditions or unusual activities.
• Lock and unlock facilities in accordance with department procedures.
• Analyze and respond to incidents and other critical situations firmly and professionally, using problem‑solving, critical‑thinking, and de‑escalation techniques when applicable.
• Demonstrate good moral character, excellent communication skills, and strong organization; multi‑task and prioritize duties and responsibilities.
• Respond to general calls for assistance and other related tasks.
• Complete required computer work in accordance with department procedures, including shift notes, incident and accident reports, parking citations, and reviewing surveillance cameras.
• Perform related accountabilities and responsibilities as required or directed.

Minimum Qualifications

• Be at least 25 years of age.
• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
• Pass a background check, drug screening, and psychological examination.
• Ability to obtain an Armed Security License, Aerosol and Handcuff certification, and CPR/AED certification.
• Security experience is preferred.

Desired Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree.
• 1–2 years experience in armed security or comparable experience.
• Armed Security License, Aerosol and Handcuff certification, and CPR/AED certification.

Physical Requirements

The work requires standing, bending, lifting, stooping, or other light physical exertion (up to 30 lb) on an occasional basis (up to 15 % of the time) and frequent walking; or moderate physical exertion (up to 50 lb) on an intermittent basis (not a routine part of the job).

Environmental Conditions

The position involves intermittent to occasional exposure to unpleasant working conditions or undesirable elements and may involve some contact with potentially hazardous or harmful elements while providing administrative or support services.
