About the role

Operations roles at Amazon put you at the center of how things move from a click to a doorstep. You'll help design, improve, and run systems that connect people, products, and places, at scale. This ten-week internship (40 hours per week) during the summer of 2027 is located within one of Amazon’s fulfillment centers, sort centers, delivery stations, or other operations buildings. As an Area Manager Intern, you will learn how to coach, motivate, and mentor a team of Amazon associates in a warehouse environment.

Amazon provides extensive training and development to become an exceptional people leader. Your main focus will be learning to manage a team as well as developing a summer project in partnership with your site leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Learn to coach, manage, and develop a team of 50-100 Amazon Associates.
  • Drive standard work and continuous improvement through an intern project.
  • Work independently and operate in an autonomous environment.
  • Stand and walk during shifts lasting up to 12 hours.
  • Work shift patterns that include nights, weekends, and/or holidays based on business needs (most follow a fixed 4-day work week with 3 days off).
  • Oversee truck deliveries, handle and sort packages using pallet jacks, operate PIT equipment (at applicable facilities), and step in as needed.
  • Work in an environment where the noise level varies.
  • Lift up to 49 pounds and frequently push, pull, squat, bend, and reach.
  • Climb and descend stairs (when applicable).

A day in the life

Start of Shift: Set the Tone

  • Shadow a current Area Manager and review handoffs from the outgoing manager to ensure continuity.
  • Lead a team huddle to align on goals, safety priorities, and key focus areas.
  • Confirm your team is positioned for success before operations begin.

Middle of Shift: Lead from the Floor

  • Walk the floor regularly to stay connected to your team and spot issues early.
  • Drive results across safety, quality, and productivity, balancing all three in real time.
  • Adjust staffing and resources as volume and priorities shift.
  • Coach and develop team members, respond to challenges, and partner with support teams to remove roadblocks.
  • Keep peers and leadership informed on shift progress and flag risks.
  • Develop your internship project.

End of Shift: Close Strong

  • Conduct a final walkthrough to ensure the area is clean and organized for the next team.
  • Review shift performance data and capture lessons learned.
  • Hand off to the incoming manager with clear priorities and next steps.
  • Complete administrative tasks to leave the shift with a clean slate.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program with all requirements anticipated to be completed between December 2027 and August 2028.
  • Willing and able to work in a fast-paced warehouse environment, including standing, walking, lifting up to 49 pounds, and frequent bending, squatting, and reaching.
  • Must have work authorization without employer intervention.
  • Not eligible for sponsorship now or in the future.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's program for Supply Chain, Business/Management, Engineering, or a related field.

Pay

$28.84 USD hourly (varies by location).
