Area Director Finance
About the role
Member of the local executive management team, the Area Director, Finance oversees 1-3 large Distribution Centers (DCs). This role serves as a key business partner to the Area President and cross-functional leaders including VP Sales, VP Operations, Human Resource Business Partner, and VP Merchandising to achieve Area and company key results. Responsible for integrating a financial lens to drive key outcomes, collaborating with Area leaders to execute financial strategy, and driving operational improvements that positively impact financial performance. The role manages Area and DC Finance, Accounting, and Inventory Control, ensuring financial integrity and control for a $500 million to $1.5 billion business Area.
Responsibilities
- Own the execution of Area finance strategy and advise on long-term business financial and strategic planning aligned with the Company Long Range Plan (LRP).
- Collaborate with functional partners to drive improved financial results and support strategic initiatives.
- Assess financial performance and initiate strategic actions to drive results, including developing financial targets through understanding key operational drivers.
- Own P&L management through strategic decisions to manage costs and improve efficiencies, providing clear visibility and guidance to the Area leadership team.
- Demonstrate analytical foresight to make immediate decisions impacting future business outcomes.
- Act as a trusted financial advisor, partnering with the Controller’s Group, Area Finance Manager, and Finance Support Team to deliver timely and accurate financial reports.
- Coordinate annual business planning and monthly forecasting for the Area, highlighting risks and opportunities.
- Establish credibility and trust with leaders by building relationships and understanding individual needs.
- Operate as a business partner with an end-to-end value chain perspective and independent point of view.
- Manage working capital and review balance sheet health quarterly with corporate stakeholders.
- Lead financial acumen training for Area and DC management to improve understanding of financial contributions.
- Identify opportunities for gross profit improvement and cost management, driving accountability for execution.
- Drive profitable sales growth by reviewing, guiding, and approving local customer contracts and incentive agreements.
- Collaborate with Sales Excellence, Area Sales management, and Revenue Management teams on customer profitability decisions.
- Analyze daily and weekly results dashboards, explain variances/trends, and coordinate action plans to meet annual business plans.
- Lead an effective Inventory Adjustments routine to attain company targets for damage, spoilage, and shrink.
- Collaborate with AVPMM and MRO to align inventory with the Company’s DIOH requirements and minimize nonproductive inventory.
- Partner with the Credit organization to support sales growth while minimizing risk and managing working capital.
- Build, train, coach, and develop a high-performing team, fostering an inclusive work environment.
- Drive continuous improvement across the Area and broader business through root cause analysis and challenging the status quo.
- Lead the implementation of the US Foods Way for Finance and solve business problems or inefficiencies.
- Responsible for all field-related SOX controls for the Area Hub and DCs, supporting the control environment.
- Complete ad hoc projects, analysis, and initiatives as requested.
Supervision
Directly supervises Area Hub staff including inventory control clerks, IT contractors, and finance managers (with their reports). Indirectly supervises IT contractors in-market DCs and maintains a reporting relationship with the credit manager and coordinators.
Relationships
- Internal: Area staff members, Regional and Support Office accounting, and all Finance personnel.
- External: Customers.
Work Environment
Onsite: The role is expected to perform assigned responsibilities inside a US Foods office-based environment.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (required).
- Minimum 7 years of accounting and/or financial analysis management experience.
- Proven experience and effectiveness in leading and managing others.
- General knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, and cost control principles including GAAP and SOX.
- Broad skillset in financial analysis and financial modeling.
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel and working knowledge of other Microsoft Office 365 applications.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organization and prioritization skills.
- Limited travel as necessary.
Preferred Qualifications
- BS in Business Administration, Accounting, or Finance.
- CPA or MBA.
- Industry experience and understanding of inventory management.
- Experience collaborating in a functional matrixed environment and virtual leadership across multiple sites.
- Anaplan experience.

Pay
The expected base rate for this role is between $120,000 - $185,000, depending on relevant experience, education, skills, function, geographic location, and other factors as applicable by law.
