About the role

The position is open exclusively to Colorado state residents. This recruitment may fill multiple vacancies at various DYS facilities across the state. The Division of Youth Services (DYS) oversees a range of residential and non-residential services for youth aged 10 to 21, including detention, commitment, and parole. DYS manages fifteen secure facilities and contracts with numerous private providers. Additionally, DYS administers juvenile parole services and oversees the Colorado Youth Detention Continuum, a state-funded program.

Summary Of This Position

This work unit provides academic, vocational, and work force readiness education in institutional facilities. It also offers professional consultation to community programs serving DYS youth and collaborates with other state and community agencies.

Primary Job Duties

  • Establishes and maintains an appropriate classroom setting through effective classroom management and engagement strategies tailored to student needs, including the use of PBIS and behavior tools.

  • Affirms new and continuing students using multiple assessment methods and collects evidence of learning. Designs and implements a variety of assessment tools aligned with state standards and critical skills.

  • Selects and implements research-based education strategies, including technology, to accommodate multi-age/multi-level students.

  • Ensures effective accommodations for special education students and communicates progress data for progress monitoring.

  • Follows the DYS instructional framework, ensuring daily learning objectives and relevant learning with appropriate assessments, meeting the needs of all youth.

  • Ensures accurate educational records are maintained in IC and/or Trails, meeting deadlines.

  • Uses technology to design, upload information, and take attendance daily, grading work appropriately.

  • Maintains communication with Central Education Office members, principals, treatment providers, and other teachers to review student and school progress.

  • Develops comprehensive plans for subject matter implementation in line with education goals and school development plans.

  • Participates in professional and staff safety development and applies learning accordingly.

  • Assists in the safety and security of the school and facility by supervising residents, tools, and materials, providing immediate assistance as necessary.

  • Adheres to Division of Youth Services and facility policies, adheres to the trauma-informed culture and expectations, and uses motivational interviewing, sanctuary model, and restorative justice language and frameworks.

  • Follows leave policy and procedures.

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in a field of study related to the work assignment.

  • Current, valid Initial or Professional Teacher license issued by the Colorado Department of Education.

  • Current, valid Interim Teacher license or Temporary Educator Eligibility Authorization substituting for the Colorado Initial or Professional Teacher license.

  • The educational and experience requirements of the Colorado Community College System for a vocational credential substituting for the degree and license requirements.

Preferred candidates will possess the following qualifications:

  • Architecture and Construction CTE issued by Colorado Department of Education.

  • Professional work experience relevant to teaching hands-on skills and/or work readiness.

  • Program development experience.

  • Experience with programming for post-secondary and secondary youth.

  • Experience working with at-risk or adjudicated youth.

  • Proficient use of data to inform instructional practice.

  • Trauma-informed practices and knowledge as it applies to at-risk populations and classroom instruction.

  • Community and work-related experience relevant to the current job market.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be 21 years old or older.

  • Position requires State of Colorado residency at the time of application and throughout the duration of employment.

  • Must possess a valid, non-restricted Colorado Driver’s License.

  • Continued employment is contingent upon successful completion of the DYS Pre-service Training Academy, Field Training Program (FTO), and mandatory annual training in all subject areas.

CDHS Selection Process Explanation:
