Architectural Specifications Writer

About the Role

An Architectural Specifications Writer assists with preparing technical project specifications and project manuals for architectural projects, primarily within our healthcare studio, while coordinating and linking information back to the firm. The writer ensures specifications align with drawings and design documents to establish material and installation requirements. This role collaborates with the firm’s Specifications Team to provide direction on technical requirements and standards.

The ideal candidate demonstrates an understanding of building materials, assemblies, systems, details, codes, construction techniques, and communication strategies.

Responsibilities

• Partner with Project Managers, Project Architects, and consultant disciplines to coordinate, prepare, and expedite specifications for construction documents.
• Conduct technical investigations of products, materials, and construction methods.
• Ensure compliance with related codes and regulations, including NFPA 285 assemblies and products.
• Prepare contract conditions, general and bidding requirements.
• Generate Preliminary Project Descriptions during early design phases.
• Review submittals for conformance with contract documents.
• Review substitutions for equivalency of product attributes, including life cycle, sustainability, and risk assessment.
• Maintain, edit, and establish new standard specifications sections and firmwide templates.
• Assist project teams with technical details and provide necessary technical information.
• Research the latest information from manufacturers and vendors.
• Work seamlessly with Specifications Team leadership to improve and implement techniques for developing specifications.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Architecture.
• Licensed Architect is preferred.
• CDT or CSI CCS certification is preferred.
• Specifications experience and/or a combination of Project Architect and specifications writing experience.
• Experience with BSD SpecLink-E is a plus.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs.

Pay

Annual base salary is $65,000 - $100,000 based on experience.
