Duties Summary

Architects in the State government are primarily responsible for the planning and designing of new construction, and the alteration, rehabilitation or restoration of existing buildings and facilities such as public schools, health, social services and higher education facilities and general government buildings.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

  • Legal Authorization To Work: The State of Hawaii requires all persons seeking employment with the government of the State shall be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.

  • Professional License: Applicants must possess a valid State of Hawaii Professional Architect license at the time of application.   • Education: A bachelor's degree in architecture or architectural engineering from an accredited university.

  • Architectural Experience: Professional architectural work experience in developing and preparing complete designs, drawings, specifications, estimates of buildings, structure, and installations. Is comprised of the performance of the recognized architectural functions based on the requiring a thorough knowledge and application of the basic physical, mathematical and architectural sciences to the solution of theoretical or practical architectural problems.

  • Supervisory Aptitude: Applicants for Level V must demonstrate aptitude or potential for the performance of supervisory duties through successful completion of regular or special assignments which involve some supervisory responsibilities or aspects of supervision; or in similar work in which opportunities for demonstrating supervisory capabilities exist; or by the completion of training courses in supervision accompanied by application of supervisory skills in work assignments; and/or by favorable appraisals by a supervisor indicating the possession of supervisory potential.

  • Driver's License: A valid driver's license is required for some positions. For these positions, applicants must possess a valid driver's license at the time of appointment.
