ARCHITECT

About the Role

You will serve as an Architect in the Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command of NAVAL FACILITIES ENG COMMAND ATLANTIC, executing in-house architectural design work products and services within specified milestones and quality standards.

Responsibilities

• Analyze and design extensive architectural alterations and modifications to existing facilities to meet the evolving demands of Navy, Marine Corps, and other Supported Commands.
• Participate in on-site Functional Analysis Concept Development (FACD) and/or charrettes to determine functional requirements and develop concept designs for large, complex projects.
• Investigate or evaluate architectural issues in existing facilities and develop reports with recommendations and options for remediation or corrective measures.
• Plan and lead project design conferences, work sessions, and on-site FACDs/charrettes with stakeholders to determine project requirements and develop concept designs.
• Identify areas of risk associated with advanced planning, design, and construction, and develop mitigation strategies or alternatives.
• Prepare correspondence, reports, economic analyses, and written/oral presentations on architectural-related topics.
• Perform technical reviews of architectural designs, calculations, drawings, specifications, and cost estimates prepared by other architects and engineers for adequacy.
• Ensure facilities are designed and constructed using sound design practices and comply with safety and architectural standards.
• Plan, coordinate, and direct multi-design projects and services for command facilities.
• Prepare architectural design drawings, calculations, and specifications using software such as AutoCAD and Specs Intact.

Requirements

This position has a selective placement factor: You must possess a current Registered Architect (RA) license/registration issued from the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, or any U.S. state. A copy of your current license/registration must be included with your application.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Requirements, your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent private/public sector experience, including:

• Utilizing knowledge of architectural concepts, theories, principles, practices, and techniques to plan, design, manage, construct, oversee, and maintain a wide range of shore installation facilities projects.
• Performing technical reviews of architectural designs, calculations, drawings, specifications, and cost estimates for adequacy.
• Ensuring facilities are designed and constructed using sound design practices and meet safety and architectural standards.
• Planning, coordinating, and directing multi-design projects and services for command facilities.
• Preparing architectural design drawings, calculations, and specifications using architectural design software (e.g., AutoCAD and Specs Intact).

Education

Applicants must meet the following Basic Requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual:

• Option A: A bachelor’s or higher degree in architecture.
• Option B: A bachelor’s or higher degree in a field related to architecture that included 60 semester hours of coursework in architecture or related disciplines, with at least:
  • 30 semester hours in architectural design, and
  • 6 semester hours in each of the following: structural technology, properties of materials and methods of construction, and environmental control systems.
• Option C: A combination of college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished:
  • A thorough knowledge of the arts and sciences underlying professional architecture, and
  • A good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of architectural principles, methods, techniques, and their applications to design and construction.

  Your curriculum must cover function, aesthetics, site, structure, economics, mechanical-electrical, and other engineering problems related to building design. If you lack a degree in architecture, you must have 1 year of experience in an architect’s office or architectural work for each year short of graduation (5 years of such experience is required in the absence of college courses).
