Archaeologist – Cultural Resources

About the role

The Archaeologist – Cultural Resources supports cultural resource compliance and historic preservation efforts for a large-scale utility infrastructure system. The role involves providing professional expertise in the identification, evaluation, protection, and management of archaeological and historic resources while coordinating with federal, state, tribal, and local partners.

Responsibilities

• Plan and support archaeological fieldwork, including cultural resource surveys, subsurface testing, site monitoring, and field documentation.
• Conduct cultural resource evaluations and prepare documentation supporting National Register of Historic Places eligibility determinations in accordance with the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA).
• Affiliate with multiple cultural resource projects by tracking schedules, priorities, budgets, and deliverables while identifying potential risks or issues.
• Cook with federal, state, tribal, and local stakeholders, including preparing agendas, meeting materials, and documentation.
• Support environmental compliance efforts by contributing to National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and NHPA documentation, identifying cultural resource considerations, and assessing potential project impacts.
• Draft and review statements of work, technical reports, cultural resource management plans, and other project documentation.
• Communicate project status and coordinate activities with internal teams, partner agencies, tribal governments, and other stakeholders.
• Maintain cultural resource records, spatial data, compliance documentation, and project files in accordance with federal records management requirements.
• Provide recommendations on cultural resource compliance, historic preservation strategies, and long-term resource protection in accordance with federal laws, regulations, and agency policies.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a closely related field required; Master's degree preferred.
• Minimum of five years of professional experience or equivalent specialized training in archaeological research, cultural resource management, or historic preservation.
• Minimum of six months of supervised archaeological field and analytical experience within the Pacific Northwest (Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, California, Nevada, or Wyoming).
• Working knowledge of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), including demonstrated experience supporting Section 106 compliance.
• Extensive experience conducting archaeological field surveys, cultural resource inventories, and preparing technical reports.

Qualifications

• Experience conducting archaeological work within the Columbia River or Snake River Basins.
• Knowledge of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and environmental compliance processes.
• Experience using GIS and GPS technologies, including ArcGIS Pro.
• Familiarity with cultural resource issues related to reservoirs, electrical transmission infrastructure, and fish and wildlife habitat restoration programs.

Pay

$40.00 – 42.75/hr., DOE
