About the role

Stantec seeks an experienced Archaeologist to join our growing cultural resources team in Michigan. The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of state regulations and State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) guidance for Michigan and the surrounding states. The candidate will also have demonstrated expertise in Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and write technical proposals, including scope development, budgeting, and scheduling.
  • Navigate permitting processes and provide guidance on regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Under the direction of the Senior Archaeologist, coordinate cultural resource investigations across various sectors, including utilities (power and gas), transportation, renewable energy, and local government projects.
  • Participate in Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) initiatives.

Requirements

The ideal candidate will have a Master’s degree in anthropology/archaeology or a related discipline, completion of an archaeological field school, and at least 5 years of CRM experience as an archaeologist. Minimum 2 years of experience in cultural resource project management, particularly in the Upper Midwest is required. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Ability to walk 4-10 miles daily over rough terrain and capability to lift up to 50 lbs is necessary.

Qualifications

  • Experience with all phases of archaeological investigation and documentation.
  • Expertise in digital data collection methods and GIS applications including ESRI Field Maps and Survey 123.
  • Demonstrated success in proposal writing and project execution.
  • Strong knowledge of cultural resource permitting requirements and regulatory frameworks.
  • Experience managing projects in utilities, transportation, or renewable energy sectors.
  • Track record of successful project delivery and team leadership.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain client relationships.
  • Strong professional network in cultural resources field.
  • Self-awareness and good judgment in seeking senior staff guidance.
  • Demonstrated positive reputation and relationships with SHPO, THPO, and other agencies.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions.

Skills

  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record and ability to travel between project sites and Stantec offices.
  • Ability to travel for fieldwork, often for extended periods.

Benefits

When conducting non-local fieldwork, paid travel time, per diem, and single occupancy hotel rooms are provided. Stantec fleet or rental cars are often provided. Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time.
