About the Role
Leidos has an exciting potential future opportunity for an Arabic Consecutive Linguist based in Arlington, VA. We are proactively looking to identify highly qualified linguists to support a DoD customer in the National Capital Region (NCR), with extensive travel to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The linguist will provide language support services including interpretation, translation, and transcription in assisting defense counsels with interviews of detainees and witnesses for courtrooms and case preparation for Military Commissions hearings held in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
Place of performance will vary with requirements, primarily in the National Capital Region (NCR) and at the Office of Military Commissions (OMC) deployed facility at US Naval Station, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, with some work at other overseas locations. Additional work will be performed on-site at OMC facilities in the NCR.
Responsibilities
- Review general and technical source material in the Arabic language to prepare accurate written translations and/or transcriptions in idiomatic English.
- Provide interpretation, translation, and transcription support, including assisting defense counsels with interviews of detainees and witnesses.
- Interpret in the consecutive mode, reproducing the original message after the speaker pauses (e.g., in a “question and answer” format).
- Translate the full meaning of written texts from one language to another, ensuring accuracy and thoroughness in translations from English into Arabic or Arabic into English.
- Transcribe audio/video discovery material into English.
- Conduct and prepare accurate translations and/or transcriptions of general and technical legal materials.
- Write and speak clearly and coherently in both Arabic and English.
- Provide written translations in gist, detailed summary, or full translation formats using approved templates and dictionaries while maintaining the integrity and meaning of the material.
- Format, proofread, edit, and apply graphic designs or software functions to meet customer product expectations.
- Translate or interpret conversations accurately and clearly.
- Consistently deliver quality products within established standards and strive to exceed minimum production levels.
- Deploy to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and other overseas locations on short notice for extended periods, staying in available housing for Commission hearings, investigative work, and case preparation.
- Attend all trial sessions, seated at the defense table.
- Interact positively with Leidos government customers and coworkers at all times.
- Collaborate effectively on group projects and address tasks efficiently.
- Work long hours to meet mission demands.
- Gain working knowledge of job-required tools and processes.
Requirements
- 5+ years of related work experience.
- BA/BS degree or equivalent formal military training or related experience considered in lieu of degree.
- Must be available for 60% travel.
- Minimum Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) score of 3 in Arabic and 3 in English for Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing (preference for 3+).
- Demonstrated history of working on translation projects while maintaining the integrity and meaning of translated material.
- Proficiency in MS Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and computer literacy.
- Sufficient technical aptitude to learn job-required tools and processes.
- Must currently possess a TS/SCI security clearance in DISS.
Preferred Qualifications
- Background or experience in the military.
- Defense Language Institute (DLI) Bachelor’s degree.
- Native-level proficiency in Arabic.
Pay
Pay Range: $73,450.00 - $132,775.00. The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreements, or other law.
