About the role
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Develops, organizes and implements high quality, member and community-focused YMCA aquatic programs at Y-Haven, which provides temporary housing and drug and alcohol treatment to adults in Cuyahoga County.
Responsibilities
- Directs and supervises program activities to meet community needs and fulfill YMCA objectives and goals.
- Establishes new program activities and expands programs within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans.
- Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations.
- Recruits, hires, trains, develops, schedules, and directs personnel and volunteers as needed; reviews and evaluates staff performance.
- Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals; ensures records of staff certifications are current and complete.
- Conducts regular and frequent sanitation of all equipment (rescue and member-used) and assigned areas.
- Monitors daily pool operations to adhere to all state, local, federal, and YMCA health and safety regulations.
- Ensures aquatic safety best practices are in place and conducts safety drills involving multiple departments to foster team cohesiveness in emergencies.
- Conducts and ensures proper maintenance of pool(s); maintains accurate records of pool chemical levels and facility maintenance.
- Secures and schedules pool facilities.
- Conducts and assures delivery of lifeguarding, swim instruction, First Aid, and CPR trainings.
- Creates and schedules YMCA aquatics programs (e.g., swim lessons, water fitness classes, swim team practices and meets).
- Assists in the marketing and distribution of program information.
- Develops and monitors safety, swim team, and program budgets to meet fiscal objectives.
- Assists in YMCA fundraising activities and special events.
- Models relationship-building skills in all interactions; responds to member and community inquiries and complaints in a timely manner.
- Assists with Program Committee meetings.
- Compiles program statistics and monitors/evaluates program effectiveness and participation.
- Serves as a Cause Driven Leader on Duty (CDLOD).
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Associate Degree preferred; in lieu of degree, High School diploma, GED, or equivalent certificate of competency and 2-3 years of related work experience.
- Minimum of three (3) years of related experience required.
- Three (3) years of supervisor and/or leadership experience preferred (e.g., head Lifeguard, aquatics coordinator or supervisor).
- Certified Pool Operator required (preferred before hire or must be obtained within 90 days of employment).
- Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification required.
- Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor Certification preferred.
- CPR and First Aid certification and safety training required within 30 days of hire.
- Completion of YMCA program-specific and operational trainings within 30 days of hire: Blood Borne Pathogen, Ten Commandments of Effective Lifeguarding, Child Abuse Prevention and Recognition, Incident Reporting, Bullying, Active Shooter, Allergies, Driver Safety, Harassment, Proper Lifting, New Employee Orientation, and Program and Financial Operation Trainings.
- Completion of YMCA aquatics training and trainer certifications.
- Demonstrated commitment to the mission and cause of the YMCA; uphold its values and ethics.
- Ability to work effectively with people of different backgrounds, abilities, opinions, and perceptions.
- Willingness and ability to be a mandated reporter for any signs or suspicion of child abuse and neglect.
Physical Demands
- Lifting and carrying demands: Floor, knee, waist, chest, shoulder lifts, and overhead lifts all under 10 lbs for class preparation, instruction, member engagement, documentation, and cleaning.
- Pushing, pulling, and carrying under 10 lbs.
- Physical aptitudes: Grasping/handling, forceful grip, forceful pinch, and fingering/dexterity required occasionally to frequently.
- Position abilities: Standing frequently; sitting, overhead reaching, horizontal reaching, bending, squatting, kneeling, standing and twisting, and sitting and twisting occasionally to rarely.
- Endurance: Walking occasionally, climbing rarely, balancing/stepping occasionally.
