Duties/Responsibilities
- Serves as a full staff member and thought partner in their respective school.
- Supports Lead Teachers with tutoring, grading, and individual or small group student instruction.
- Observes Lead Teachers to improve instructional techniques and classroom management.
- Provides appropriate supervision of students during class, breaks, meals, and transitions to maintain an optimal work environment and to ensure students’ safety and well-being in partnership with the Lead Teacher.
- Assists with various work inside and outside the classroom, including supporting the main office team, teaching and helping coordinate Enrichment classes, organizing student events, and developing mentoring learning partnerships with students.
- Attends and participates in events outside regular school hours.
- In collaboration with the grade level team, plans and executes a rigorous, standards-aligned curriculum that assesses students’ progress.
- Periodically plans and delivers instruction, gradually taking on more responsibility throughout the year.
- Provides students daily feedback on mastery performance in character and academics and plans for individual learning needs in partnership with the Lead Teacher.
- Collaborates with the grade level team to plan and execute a rigorous, standards-aligned curriculum that assesses students’ progress.
- Supports students by providing one-on-one and small group tutoring daily, and small group intervention and student support with the potential of teaching small groups of students in partnership with the Lead Teacher.
- Meets regularly with a coach and school leadership to implement feedback on lessons and instruction.
- Provides the Lead Teacher with support in instruction, assessments, grading, and other classroom responsibilities.
- Aids in problem-solving and making timely determinations with classroom issues in a solution-focused manner.
- Establishes, cultivates, and maintains a collaborative relationship with the Lead Teacher.
- Responsible for managing and reducing risk within the classroom and seeks assistance to resolve the matter.
- Serves as an advisor to a small group of students.
- Aid to co-lead advisory/homeroom in the morning and afternoon.
- Supervises students during transitions, breakfast, lunch, and after school.
- Accountable, along with the Lead Teacher, for student’s mastery of academic standards.
- Supports the collection of data to inform instructional decisions.
- Performs clerical duties, as needed, that serve to advance student learning.
- Establishes and maintains strong communication lines with all parents, shares continuous progress, and is available for open houses, parent-teacher conferences, and other events involving parents in partnership with the Lead Teacher.
- Communicates effectively with students, families, and colleagues.
- Engages in practice-based professional development, mentorship, and coaching sessions.
- Performs all duties expected of classroom teachers in partnership with the Lead Teacher, including but not limited to: Implementing curricula and activities to meet academic standards, designing and implementing assessments that measure progress toward academic standards, using assessment data to refine curriculum and inform instructional practices, participating in collaborative curriculum development, grade-level activities, school-wide functions, events, and trips, providing consistent rewards and consequences for student behavior, establishing and maintaining strong communication lines with all parents and sharing progress, being available for open houses, parent-teacher conferences, and other events involving parents.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited College or University, required.
- Valid NYS Teaching Licensure or willingness to pursue state certification, required.
- Experience as a school educator, preferably in a charter or public school environment, preferred.
- Prior experience working in schools and urban communities, preferred.
- Aptitude to create and work within an inclusive environment that honors and supports a diversity of backgrounds and perspectives.
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods were spent sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to access and navigate all areas of the school and other facilities as needed.
- Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- The employee needs to read, write, and speak English fluently.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, use fingers to type, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance; stoop/bend and reach, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk, hear.
- Dexterity requires writing and operating standard office machines such as computers, printers, copiers, fax machines, phones, and calculators.
- Ability to occasionally lift and move up to 20 pounds.
