Apprentice Ductline Mechanic (Atlanta)
About the role
National Underground Services (NUS) of Georgia Power provides construction & maintenance services for the network underground electrical systems across Georgia. The apprentice ductline mechanic (ADLM) positions are based in Atlanta, GA, requiring the ability to work within a certain distance of the office.
Responsibilities
- Assist with the construction & maintenance of network underground systems and other high-reliability distribution systems.
- Learn the installation of precast network manholes, vaults, bay walls, and how to remove/strip concrete from energized ductlines and install vault & manhole roofs.
- Work in enclosed spaces such as manholes, vaults, and tunnels, requiring access by ladders and working in deep excavations.
- Perform physically demanding tasks in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, and ice.
- Work on "call-out" duties during storm emergencies, including overnight and out-of-state travel.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Basic mechanical and electrical aptitude or background.
- Minimum 1 year of work experience in construction, heavy industrial maintenance, utility, military, or electrical fields.
- Experience working outdoors, with heavy equipment/machinery, heavy load rigging/lifting, emergency responders, commercial truck driving, and/or farming is a plus.
- Network Underground experience with installation & construction of infrastructure is desirable.
- Military experience is a plus.
Qualifications
- Proven ability to read, understand, and follow procedures, rules, and regulations.
- Strong customer service skills.
- Ability to work on the system in enclosed spaces and in deep excavations.
- Safe work practices, including working accident-free and injury-free.
Skills and Abilities
- Basic mechanical aptitude and knowledge of hand tools.
- Strong physical stamina and ability to lift and drag equipment weighing 50 pounds or more.
- Ability to work in extreme weather conditions throughout the year.
- Ability to work in a team environment.
- Knowledge of safety practices and "Our Company Values."
Benefits
The position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between Georgia Power and IBEW Local 84. Starting pay for all new hires is $6,458/month or approximately $37.26/hour. Union membership is optional.
