APPRENTICE

About the role

The Apprentice School offers a four‑ and five‑year apprenticeship program for students interested in shipbuilding careers. Since 1919 the school has produced over 10,000 graduates who support Newport News Shipbuilding’s construction and maintenance of nuclear‑powered aircraft carriers and submarines for the U.S. Navy. Apprentices work in a modern shipbuilding facility, gaining hands‑on experience in heavy manufacturing, construction, and a variety of skilled trades.

Requirements

• U.S. citizenship
• High school diploma or GED with a minimum of four units (C or better) in Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, plus one additional qualifying course (e.g., Mechanical/Drawing, Vocational/Technical Education, Computer Science, Advanced Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Principles of Technology, EDGE Course)
• If Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II are not passed, completion of a college‑level algebra‑based math course (Pre‑Calculus or higher) with a C or better
• Ability to work at extreme heights and in confined spaces
• Physical ability to kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, climb, lift 40 lb, and perform overhead work
• Pass a respirator fit test and a Physical Agility Test
• Willingness to work indoors/outdoors year‑round in all weather conditions and in controlled radiation areas
• Willingness to work overtime as needed
• Agreement to undergo a background investigation and drug screening

Preferred Qualifications

• Demonstrated college readiness in Math and English (post‑secondary transcripts optional)
• College‑level coursework or testing outcomes in Math and English

Pay

Salary range: $50,856.00 to $74,172.80 per year. Final compensation will be based on experience, qualifications, and other job‑related factors.

Schedule

Full‑time, first‑shift schedule typically from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. Hours are subject to change, and overtime may be required.
