About the role

This role is part of an Amazon Special Projects team that takes the company’s Think Big leadership principle to the limits. As an Applied Scientist, you will focus on building state-of-the-art ML models for healthcare, working on projects that could fundamentally transform healthcare outcomes. The team rewards curiosity while maintaining a laser-focus on bringing products to market, operating with the agility of a startup while backed by Amazon’s resources and operational excellence.

We’re looking for builders who are excited about working on ambitious, undefined problems and are comfortable with ambiguity. This role offers a unique opportunity to collaborate with a diverse and talented team of scientists, engineers, and product managers, as well as other teams across Amazon.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement novel AI/ML solutions for complex healthcare challenges
  • Drive advancements in machine learning and data science, balancing theoretical knowledge with practical implementation
  • Work closely with customers and partners to understand their requirements and navigate ambiguity in early-stage product development
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver impactful solutions in a collaborative, entrepreneurial environment
  • Establish best practices for ML experimentation, evaluation, development, and deployment
  • Partner with leadership to define roadmap and strategic initiatives
  • Solve real-world problems by analyzing large amounts of data, generating insights, designing simulations and experiments, and developing statistical and ML models
  • Prepare written and verbal presentations to share insights with audiences of varying technical sophistication

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of building models for business applications
  • PhD, or Master's degree and 4+ years of experience in CS, CE, ML, or related field
  • Experience in patents or publications at top-tier peer-reviewed conferences or journals
  • Experience programming in Java, C++, Python, or related language
  • Experience solving business problems through machine learning, data mining, and statistical algorithms
  • Experience designing experiments and performing statistical analysis of results

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using Unix/Linux
  • Experience in professional software development
  • Experience in several of the following areas: machine learning, statistics, deep learning, natural language processing, or information retrieval
  • Experience applying causal inference techniques in artificial intelligence and machine learning systems

Pay

Base salary range: $142,800 - $193,200 USD annually (USA, WA, Seattle). Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications, and location.
