About the role

We're seeking a Senior Applied Scientist to join our AWS Healthcare AI team, working on AI-driven clinical solutions that transform how clinicians interact with patients and document care. In this role, you will contribute to the research and development of new, highly influential AI applications that re-imagine experiences for end-customers (e.g., consumers, patients), frontline workers (e.g., customer service agents, clinicians), and back-office staff (e.g., claims processing, medical coding).

As a leading subject matter expert in NLU, deep learning, knowledge representation, foundation models, and reinforcement learning, you will collaborate with a team of scientists to invent novel, generative AI-powered experiences. This involves defining research directions, developing new ML techniques, conducting rigorous experiments, and ensuring research translates to impactful products. You will be a hands-on technical innovator passionate about building scalable scientific solutions, setting the standard for excellence, and leading complex reviews with significant influence across AWS, Amazon, and the global research community.

Responsibilities

• Research and develop new AI applications for healthcare, focusing on experiences for end-customers, frontline workers, and back-office staff.
• Define research directions and develop novel machine learning techniques, particularly in NLU, deep learning, knowledge representation, foundation models, and reinforcement learning.
• Conduct rigorous experiments to validate and refine AI models and solutions.
• Translate research into impactful, scalable products that solve enduring business challenges in healthcare.
• Set standards for scientific excellence and scalable solutions across teams.
• Define evaluation methods and lead complex technical reviews.
• Collaborate with a team of scientists and engineers to drive innovation in generative AI.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of experience building models for business applications.
• PhD, or Master's degree and 4+ years of experience in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Machine Learning, or a related field.
• Experience with patents or publications at top-tier peer-reviewed conferences or journals.
• Proficiency in programming languages such as Java, C++, or Python.
• Experience in one or more of the following areas: algorithms and data structures, parsing, numerical optimization, data mining, parallel and distributed computing, or high-performance computing.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience using Unix/Linux.
• Experience in professional software development.

Pay

Base salary ranges for this position:

• USA, CA, Mountain View: $171,600 - $222,200 USD annually.
• USA, WA, Seattle: $142,800 - $193,200 USD annually.
