About the role

We are seeking an Applied Scientist (all levels) to drive innovation in applied machine learning and AI at Opendoor. This role will significantly impact our valuation systems, ensuring the most accurate and transparent pricing for our customers. Beyond pricing, you will tackle a variety of complex ML challenges, including multi-modal modeling and operational optimization.

Responsibilities

  • Design and deploy architectural improvements to our DNN-based home valuation models
  • Develop and deploy interpretable ML models to explain pricing decisions to customers
  • Incorporate unstructured data (like images, videos, or text) into our forecasting and valuation pipelines using advanced AI models
  • Collaborate with Engineering and Operations teams to enhance human-in-the-loop pricing systems
  • Improve feature engineering and model training pipelines for production systems
  • Rethink risk and optimization models using real-world data and domain insights

Requirements

  • Strong software engineering and coding skills in Python, with experience in production codebases
  • Experience developing and deploying ML models end-to-end, from research to production
  • Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in computer science, statistics, mathematics, or a related quantitative field
  • Hands-on experience with deep learning architectures such as ConvNets, Transformers, or similar
  • Solid foundation in statistics and experimental design
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, able to work with cross-functional stakeholders and convey technical ideas clearly

Qualifications

  • Familiarity with Pyspark and distributed data processing
  • Experience in search, recommendation systems, or personalization
  • Background in large language models (LLMs) or vision-language models (VLMs)
  • A genuine interest in real estate, though no prior experience is required

Skills

  • Strong software engineering and coding skills in Python

Pay

The base pay range for this position is $156,800 - $355,000 annually, plus RSUs. Pay within this range varies by work location and may also depend on your qualifications, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
